Ravenclaw

Postby Lizzy Bennet » Monday 23 June 2003 3:27:58pm

Well, "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" and "there are two tragedies in life: one is not getting what you want, the other is getting it" spring to mind when I think how much I wanted to learn about Ravenclaw and its students!

I got my wish . . . and then some!

Sadly, the students we learned about in Ravenclaw weren't exactly the greatest people. We got Cho, Marietta, Luna, Michael, Zachiarias (was he a Ravenclaw or a Hufflepuff?), etc. No one too redeeming, and some not all that bright or clever, in my opinion. And what happened to being wise? Didn't see a lot of that, but then perhaps I'm being too hard on them. :D

What did you think of what we learned about Ravenclaw and its students? I'm not sure what I was expecting, but I guess of all the Ravenclaws we were introduced to, I liked Luna the best. She was a little out there, but I think she's much sharper and wise than people give her credit for. I'm not sure she and Harry will become an item, but I could see them becoming good friends...just as I see Neville and Harry becoming good friends. The three share common experiences. Who knows, perhaps Neville and Luna??

But anyway, I'll be interested in what you think about what we've learned about Ravenclaw and your reactions to that.

I say that we can't form a perception of Ravenclaw based on the students we've met, since we've only met a handful. Besides, isn't Ravenclaw supposed to be one of the better houses?

But yeah, I was kind of disappointed too to see how all the Ravenclaws we've met turned out . . .

Just to 'pick' on three --Luna, Cho, and Marietta--we got to see the Space-Cadet, the Drama Queen, and the Tattletale . . . what a stellar group of Ravenclaws. I am just teasing, but seriously...I hope we get to meet some people who live up to the reputation of Ravenclaw in future books...though, I do think, as odd as Luna is, she is wise and more deep than she may appear. :)

Oh, but did you notice how Hermione admitted to almost having been sorted into Ravenclaw?! I remembered speaking about that here about a week ago and was v. excited that it was mentioned in the book! I do hope that JK goes into more detail about that in Books 6 and seven.

And I hate Cho Chang. With every inch of my being.

She was a pain, hey!!! I think that Luna is generally a very good person, just acts a bit weird because of what I woudl assume is her idolisation of her father, who prints tonnes of weird things! After all, lots of younger kids idolise their parents, especially if one is gone... :(

Also, yes, marietta dobbed them in, but I'd say that that would be a very hard thing for a teenager like that... on one hand, they think that what they are doing is right, but then, probabyl her parents, and the minestry and alot of other older and supposingly wiser people are telling her that it is wrong... Also, she never really wanted to be there, so what did people expect? And no, I'm not tryingto justify her actions, just saying that t should have been expected... Cho just dragged her along so that she could be around Harry...

I LMAO at what happened to her face though!!! Thoroughly deserved!!! HAHAHA

Zachiarias is a Hufflepuff... but did anyone get the feeling that Rowling is setting him up for something more? He always behaved so obnoxiously... but he's in the DA... maybe he'll turn out to be for the other side later in the books?

i think Luna Lovegood will be the next girl Harry likes...she comforted him n sort of shared her experience of her mum's death...even though she seems to be a nutter in the 1st place but then she appears to be more than what everybody else think abt her...

Cho..

Postby Jay » Tuesday 24 June 2003 6:11:43pm

I has such high expectations for Cho in this book :(. But she turned out to be such an annoying drama queen. However, it was really funny to watch her and Harry interact. Reminded me of my own awkwardness around pretty girls

I guess the Ravenclaws that we met was not the greatest bunch of people, but saying that we only met a very small group of ravenclaws, so you can't judge the personalitys of group of Ravenclaws on such a small amount of people. Anyway I guess Ravenclaw has the intelligent and smartest people in its group, and some of the greatest minds in history where not the nicest of people, or they seemed to be a bit whats the word "out there", but being a ravenclaw myself I will not critises any of my fellow ravenclaws (apart from maybe drama queen Cho), so Luna your alright by me girl, you might be a bit dizzy, but I bet you have a great mind, and would be a useful allie.

:-? Not looking good for our Hufflepuff either. The captain of the Quidditch is a girl seeker, and Zach(forgot how to spell his name) is a asking many questions guy. Who else is Hufflepuff. Susan Bone doesn't have many details on her. WE supposed to be a good kid  Looking forward for more characters from Hufflepuff. WEll we need more people who will turn out to be a great witches and wizards.

How come nobody mentioned Quidditch captain Roger Davies yet? He's supposedly goodlooking and stuff, went out with Fleur at the Yule bal. Though that are not of course the 'qualities' you'd expect in a Ravenclaw. : )

I just found this list of Ravenclaw students, but I don't think it's updated with the people mentioned in OotP yet.

Cho Chang [90-97] Q. Seeker
Roger Davies [1990s] Q. Captain
Penelope Clearwater [87-94] Prefect 1992-3, Percy Weasley's girlfriend
Terry Boot [91-98]
Mandy Brocklehurst [91-98]
Cornfoot, Stephen [91-98] (HPM)
Kevin Entwhistle [91-98] (HPM)
Su Li [91-98] (HPM)
Morag MacDougal [91-98] (house: HPM)
Fawcett, S. [female, no later than 91, since she was at the Yule Ball CS11, GF16, 23]
Lisa Turpin [91-98]
Padma Patil [91-98] twin sister of Parvati Patil in Gryffindor
Stewart Ackerley [94-01]
Orla Quirke [94-01]

Yo, Penelope Clearwater and Padma Patil seemed OK in books 3 and 4, if I recall.

The point is, outside Gryffindor we did not encounter in the books amazing figures from the other houses, apart perhaps Cedric Diggory.

I do not think Ravenclaw got the worst set of characters. I mean, can you cite one decent person from Slytherin ? At least in Ravenclaw some look friendly. And, clearly, there must be some outstanding Slytherin, mmh, with 200 people in it, or close to that...

200? In this essay www.hp-lexicon.org/hogwarts_howmany.html it is said that all students of Hogwarts together number in the 300. Slytherin having 2/3 of that seems odd! Of course, the essay isn't necessarily correct, but it is quite convincing : ) .

Well, dunno, during one of the Quidditch match of the third book, about 200 Slytherin, all in green, are mentionned, no ? But the exact number of people in each house is probably one of those blurry issues :D

:-? Wonder if anybody did make a list of Hufflepuff at all. At least some of our Hufflepuff characters are good people unlike some from others Houses  Ernie is a good boy. Ok Hannah Abbot is a little crazy, but who can blame her for going crazy over O.W.L.s.. all the 5th year are. So far so good Ernie is great.
