I agree with the basilisk, but I don't see why a snake would want to help Voldemort by free will.

I don't thinks snakes really have as much free will as humans, though. I'm sure that were Helga Hufflepuff to master Parseltongue, the snake would blindly follow her as well. And, as far as I see it, snakes and Slytherin have gone hand-in-hand since the beginnings of the magical world.

But the snake did what a gryffindor said, so I think that it is just parseltongue what makes a snake receive and accomplish orders.

Yeah, but think about it witht he likes of a dog... you can tell a dog to sit... and he might obey you, but you dont' really have any power to control him... I suppose thatyou can hit him if he refuses (though it might be a bit stupid to do that to a venomous snake) but you arent' actually controlling the dog in a sense that you have the power of control over him... it's more like he understands your wishes and simply does it to please... I think that it's more like that, except that he is actually speaking the snake's language! (and you dont' bark at a dog to make him sit!!!)

I think that that difference makes the snake do what you want; I'm sure that if you could speak like a dog, any dog would obey you.

Well, but it is different, speaking like a snake makes yo powerful, so I think that there is something in you that makes you able to control them.
And well if an italian doesn't talk any other language there is no way for him to do what you want if you do not speak italian

Well, you are right it doesn't make you powerful; you need to be powerful to do it.
And I' going to be right, just like the other stuff, just wait 7 days

I don't know baout that.. I think that it's jsut a very very rare thing, but power has nothing to do with wether or not you are a pareseltouhge... Granted, the wizsards that we know to be parseltounges happen to be powerful, but I think that's conicenence... after all DD isnt' one!

We are not sure about that, are we? Besides for example he can talk Mermish.
If Neville had developed this abbility along with Harry in book two then I would have given you the reason, but from what we know you have to be powerful to be able to talk with snakes
