He killed his father 50 years ago and maybe a month (if we place ourselves the day Harry had the dream)

Right, now the world is clear!

he was 15/16 (5th year) exactly 50 years before book 2

Does Tom ever say what age he was when he wrote the diary? I konwthat it says it took him 5yrs to figure out how to open it, but maybe he only heard of the chamber in his 2nd yr, so +5yrs = 7th yr???

I can somewhere remember hearing the diary preserved his 16yr old self, but I cant' find it anywhere in the book, so I'm wondering if I just imagined it??? *I think that I do that sometimes!!!*

I remember that part in the movie, but not in which part of the book it might be; but remember he was a prefect, so at least he must have been in 6th year, because if he was in 7th he would be Head Boy.

Of course I knew about the Chamber of Secrets. In my day, they told us it was a legend, that it did not exist. But this was a lie. In my fifth year, the Chamber was opened and the monster attacked several students, finally killing one.

well tom says he opened it in his fifth year.....

yes it was at the start of book four which would mean it would have to be 49 years ago or voldemort would still be living in hogwarts.....he stayed in hogwarts during summer remember so hes hardly likely to be able to run off and kill his father during his summer hols between his 6th and 7th year...which it would be if it was 50 years before harry's dream....

We are not sure he stayed during the summer.

But lets see dates; based that second year of Harry was in 1992 (based in the cake of NHN in the same book which had the date), then 50 years ago the chamber was open, that is 1942, when Tom was in fifth grade. Then book four takes place in 1994, 50 years ago would exactly the summer when Tom finished school.

well he seemed pretty desperate to stay at hogwarts for the summer between his 5th and 6th year....where would he go between 6th and 7th...surely not back to the orphanage...he was so desperate to stay at hogwarts he closed the chamber of secrets and stopped his heir of slytherin stuff to keep the school open....

you would have thought if he was gonna kill the riddles who share his name by a magic spell then he wouldnt do it when hes stuck at school for several months afterwards where the ministry can find him easily if they make a connection....that and the use of magic in the summer holidays...it isnt allowed in harry's time...how do we know it wasnt the same back then

Yeah, but Tom was in 1942 in fifth year, so when he goes out of school is 1944, being Harry in 1994 when he had the dream.

And the point of Sonk is right, he wasn't allow to use magic in summer, specially the Avada Kedavra will be a curse the ministry will know if a student does it, no?

Allright, here's the way I see it.
1927 - Tom Riddle Jr. was born to a witch mother and muggle father in Little Hangelton. His mother dies just after his birth and he's sent to live at an orphanage.
1938 - (Sept.) Tom Riddle Jr. starts his first year at Hogwarts.
1940 - (Sept.) Hagrid starts his first year at Hogwarts.
1942 - (Sept.) Tom Riddle Jr. starts his fifth year at Hogwarts. He learns how to open the Chamber of Secrets and control the Basilisk inside.
1943 - (Spring) Moaning Myrtle is killed by Basilisk.
Hagrid is wrongly accused and expelled from Hogwarts.
Tom Riddle Jr. begins the construction of his diary.
1944 - (Summer?) Tom Riddle Jr. kills his father and grandparents (on his father's side,) in Little Hangleton.
1945 - (June) Tom Riddle Jr. graduates from Hogwarts.

And I think to say that the Ministry would know of his using magic over the summer is superfluous. He was already incredibly powerful at that point and I'm sure that there are precautions you can take or a blocking charm that you can institute so that magic can go unnoticed.

No Blaise, there is one mistake; Tom enter fifth grade in 1941, then in 1942 spring Myrtle is killed.
