You also have to take into consideration that it is not like a normal school where the pupils are seperated equally between the houses , rather at Hogwarts the Sorting Hat decides and this means that it would be possible for there to be,for example, only 4 new 1st year boys in Gryffindor and 10 in Slytherin etc etc.

your original guess has to be way off. Just look at the number of people that sit in the great hall for meals. Way more then 280 people.

I have to agree. My school has about 200 people, one fifth of which is 7th graders. When we go to assemblies, the entire school sits on the bleachers, and I'm telling you, my school could fit on one house table.

I've been wondering, what if the houses were uneven?
I know this is near impossible, but what if Slytherin had 400, Gryffindor had 100, Ravenclaw had 50, and Hufflepuff had 30? Wouldn't that make the house points uneven and make it unfair for the rest of the seven years?

No, I don't believe so, as the ratio would be about the same. Also, those proportions are extremely strange. The chances of a kid getting sorted into hufflepuff are one out of four, and your example doesn't match those odds in the slightest.

While you make a good point about ratios you have to remember that when they sort it isn't a random selecting, so a persons chances of getting into a house may be diffent. Ex. Malfoy definatly wouldn't make it in to gryfindor based on his person. And while the hat had trouble with harry it never considered Hufflepuff or Ravenclaw so his chances were 50:50. See what I mean. Although I think the idea that the houses being uneven is on the right track. Just not a such a grand scale.
