“Give me your wand.”
“I don't have one. And when Tommie finds out, you won't either.”

Chapter One

Albus Dumbledore observed the first year students as they filed into the Transfiguration classroom. Most looked stunned, still getting over the shock of being in a school for wizards. Others simply looked delighted. One student looked dreamy and knowing, as if she had always known this was coming.

“Everyone please take your seats as I take the roll call.” Dumbledore instructed. One by one he flicked off the students' names on the parchment. He placed the list of names on his desk and turned to face the students.

“Welcome to Transfiguration. I think you'll find this class to be challenging, but not too hard, I hope. Transfiguration is the turning of one object into another. Today we'll be trying to turn matches into needles. Camber, if you would please pass out the matches on my desk.”

A young brown haired boy stood up and began passing out the matches. A few students looked mischievously pleased at this development. “I think you'll find them rather hard to set on fire, and I would advise you all not to try.” Dumbledore gave Tom Riddle a look warning him not to try anything. The boy looked eager to learn, not at all rebellious. Dumbledore nodded to himself, pleased that the child had turned over a new leaf so nicely. “Everyone please take out your wands.”

There was a shuffle and scraping as everyone scrambled to grab their wands. Once it was still once more in the brightly lit classroom, Dumbledore advised everyone on the act of turning a match into a needle. Then he set them loose to practice.

Some immediately began to strike their matches against the desks. Those who did soon heard a sizzling and turned to find their quills had melted.

Some students' gazes flicked from their matches to their wands and back in confusion. One student just poked their match and started looking at what the other students were doing.

Very few actually managed to turn their matches into needles that Albus saw. This included Tom Riddle, he noticed.

At the end of the class, Dumbledore observed the results. Only two people managed to transfigure their needles. Tom Riddle and Liana Thompson, a tall, lanky girl with pale brown hair and light blue eyes.

Dumbledore rewarded the two with large squares of chocolate. The rest of the students seemed more eager to do their spells better after that.

As the students filed out of the classroom, Albus noticed that a wand had been left on the floor by Liana's desk.

“Liana,” he called, walking up to her, “You've forgotten your wand.” Dumbledore gestured to the fallen wand.
“Oh, that's not mine.” Liana informed Dumbledore, “I don't have a wand.”

Time for an update! I know my chapters have been really short, but this fanfic is going to cover a lot of time, with lots of chapters.

“How do you do magic if you don't have a wand?”
“How do you eat if you don't have a fork?”

Chapter Two

Vera Lanther was breaking the rules, and she knew it. She had casted an eavesdropping charm on Tom Riddle and Liana Thompson. If any juicy gossip was revealed about Liana, Vera had to know. It was for Tom's own safety.

Because they were in love, Tom just didn't know it yet. And protecting someone you loved was a very virtuous thing to do, Vera had decided. Vera Lanther: the Virtuous. She liked that. Vera settled down to listen, imagining the wonderful things people would write about her.

“I think it's cool, what you do.” Tom was saying.

“Thanks. You're better at magic, though.” Liana insisted. “You levitated your feather before I even figured out what we were supposed to do.”

“But you do magic differently, so it doesn't count. They never told us how to do it without a wand. I wish I could do what you could.”

“But you're so good at wand magic. Why abandon what you're good at for something you'd never even heard of?”

“Curiosity. I looked in the library, and no one's ever done what you do before. You're special.” Vera had the impression that Tom was blushing.

“You think so?” Liana's smile shone through her tone of voice.

“Yeah.” Tom's answering tone sounded just as happy. Vera got up with a start and stomped away.

* * *

Winter came with a flurry of snow, and soon it was Christmas morning. Vera got up silently just before dawn. She tip-toed down the stairs and into the Slytherin Common room.

Being careful not to rouse any of the portraits, Vera crossed the room and walked up to the Boy's Dormitory. Tom Riddle was going to wake up to find a present from Vera: the Virtuous. An honour. That's what she thought, anyway.

Silently opening the Boy's Dormitory door, Vera walked over to Tom Riddle's bed.

Pulling aside his four poster bed's curtains, Vera experienced a great shock: there already was a present there! And it was from Liana! Vera wondered in shock how Liana had known, then remembered that they both had the same source.

An overheard conversation floated to the front of her mind:

“What are you hoping to get for Christmas?” Liana had asked.

“Nothing. I don't get presents.”

“I'll get you one.”

But how had Liana gotten it to the Slytherin Common room? She was a Ravenclaw!

And then Vera had an idea. The best, most brilliant idea ever in the history of ideas.

Liana must have snuck into the Common Room!

And she, Vera: the Virtuous would be the one to turn her in!

Oh, the glory and honour! She'd surely be given a special award, and a feast in her honour! Vera hurried out of the Boy's Dormitory, all presents forgotten.

“Professor, Professor!” Vera panted as she stumbled into the Slytherin Head's office. “Liana Thompson snuck into the Common Room!”

The Head looked baffled. “How do you know this?”

“I saw a gift from her in the Boy's Dormitory!”

“And why were you in the Boy's Dormitory?” Vera blushed, but quickly explained.

“I was giving someone a present! And I saw a present from Liana there and--”

“Did you perhaps stop to think that Liana got help from, oh maybe, the houselves? Ms. Thompson did not sneak in, although I do appreciate your concern. There is nothing to be upset about. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have some gift-giving to do myself.”

Vera stomped out of the office, stunned. This was not happening. This could not be happening! No! Vera was shattered.

She ran into her dorm, heart-broken, and sobbed openly onto her bed. Vera felt as though Christmas had been canceled, for surely, Liana had ruined her life.

And Vera: the Virtuous-- no, she was Vera: the Justified now. And Vera: the Justified would get revenge.

how could i not? we have to make up for all the time you were at college. im glad you like the whole POV switching. i figured it would bring more mystery into liana's personality if you saw her through the eyes of many people.
