Snape-DADA

Postby DucksRMagical » Wednesday 1 August 2007 4:59:35pm

I have a new theory as to why Dumbledore didn't let Snape teach DADA. Dumbledore knew the job was cursed, and he needed Snape at the castle. He didn't want to risk Snape dying or leaving the school.

And Dumbledore let Snape have the job in the 6th book because he knew Snape would have to return to Voldemort soon because Voldy was getting more and more powerful. If Snape was going to continue to make Voldy believe he really was on his side, Snape would need to go to Voldy.

I think it served a useful purpose.

A big part in what kept Snape alive was his job as a spy -- for Voldemort. It made him indispensible. If he were no longer of use as the DADA teacher, the value of his life would drop immediately.

Of course, it also served the purpose of allowing Harry to continue his goal to become an Auror, even though that's not exactly what happened in the seventh book. If Snape has kept him in the class even after he didn't get the required grade, it would look suspicious. They had to work out a way for Harry to take Potions that wouldn't be suspicious, and at the same time, they needed Snape safe for one more year, so that Dumbledore would be killed. Best way to accomplish both is to hire a Potions teacher who would teach Harry, and transfer Snape to another subject.

I forgot to add:

It's possible the reason Snape was never given the DADA post to begin with has nothing to do with Dumbledore not wanting Snape around the Dark Arts. Dumbledore knew Snape was in regular contact with the darkest of all the dark wizard, and if that didn't tempt him back into it, teaching defense would certainly not.

Considering what we know now, the reason Dumbledore didn't give Snape the Dark Arts job was because he knew the risk of something happening, and he needed Snape to stick around.

And Dumbledore wanted to get that memory from Slughorn, of course, that's why he hired him in the first place, I think. I mean he was not just a Potions teacher to replace Snape.

Can you elaborate on why you think so so that I can come up with a convincing argument against it on Sev's behalf?

I have sympathy for him and feel bad that he had such a bad life, but I still don't like him that much. Yes he was brave and courageous, but he was still awful to Harry. Harry didn't even know why Snape hated him for much of his school career. Snape was punishing Harry for something his father did to Snape when they were kids. I think it's horrible to punish the kid for something the parents did.

I agree with you. But that was probably the way that he grew up and wasn't able to overcome his childhood.

and every teacher has students they like less than others. and how would you feel if your arch foe married the best friend you ever had and then you were expected to love your enemie's son? i suspect snape also blamed james a bit for lily's death.

Great theories, I never thought of it that way...
