Snape's Occlumency

Postby greensock » Monday 6 August 2007 5:30:58am

Does anyone else think now that Snape might have become so good at it because of his love for Lily?

You mean, he learnt to close his mind so Voldemort (or anyone) couldn't discover his love for Lily too easily?
It would certainly make sense. Although Snape was a very closed person anyway so he wouldn't like anyone finding out anything about him in that way anyway, I think.

He also had to close his mind to Voldy because otherwise Voldy would have found out that Snape was on the good side.

well, i think snape was always a private persone and learned to close his mind before he joined voldie (voldie didn't know he loved lily in the first place remember, he thought she just captured his fancy) so he could avoid his housemates (i think slytherins learned more about the dark arts then the rest of the houses in those times)

I was thinking that he wouldn't want anyone, especially Voldy, but anyone at all to know that he loved a mudblood. It seems that it would be very embarassing to him.

Just a thought... I've been re-reading the earlier books, and a lot of times, I came across the reference that Snape seemed to be looking through Harry's lies and tricks... guess he has been using Occlumency all those times...

I dont think he was usuing Occlumency at those times earlier in the book, becuase didn't Harry know when Snape was in his mind. It like hurt him during his lessons didn't it?

oooo! in my rush to finish the books, I totally missed that part! How awsome! (that Malfoy knew occulemcy already and was taught it by his aunt)

in response to the original question, it is such a pity that Snape was in so deep with the Deatheaters and Voldemort's cause, because he saw the error of it when they threatened to harm It was a learned behaviour for him, to dispise mudbloods. Still, he was always a good person, just poorly influenced and unloved.

I agree that he hid his thoughts from the start because he was a very private person. And his love for Lily was his one big secret that would have given anyone (pureblood or otherwise) cause to pick on him and use it against him. So ya, he became good at it because of his love for Lily, and then to also hide his betrayal to Voldermort.
