Please read them all before answering.

And if you feel like it, tell us why!

Order of the Phoenix. I love that one. I love the Umbridge plot line. I don't like Umbridge, but I like how all the students react to her and especially like how the centaurs carried her off. And I love when Fred & George leave, and then all the other students wreak havoc.

Goblet of Fire is my favorite, followed closely by Half Blood Prince. GoF is the book that got me hooked on the series -- so much detail on the magical world...beautifully written fiction. For me it was a turning point in the series as it's the book when Voldy rematerializes.

Definately Philosopher's Stone and I have no idea why. My order goes like this: 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 2nd, 4th, 6th.

I agree with you, that's why I like GoF most, too. I liked Voldemort's story in the 6th book, too, and the last books in general. They let clear these are not books written (just) for kids.

For me, it is definitely Prisoner of Azkaban.
The twist at the end really stunned me. Who would have thought that the Grim was actually the dog form of Sirius Black and Peter Pettigrew faked his death by cutting off his finger and escaped in his rat form. And that was the first book, Harry casted his first patronus.

Oooo the excitement.

I voted Hallows, although now I think about it I should have voted HBP. I loved the background story on Voldemort, and the relationship Harry and Dumbledore had in that book, shame it didnt last.

Hallows probably second.

I reread them all the time and every time they are brilliant in their own way. I love them all, damnit!

I actually prefer the first four books to the last three. I find the first ones a lot more enjoyable whereas the last ones are just information.

I absolutely loved HBP. I really loved hearing all the background stuff on Voldy, and the whole ending with Dumbledore. and the whole thing with Malfoy supposed to kill him! Oooh ooohh and how Harry thought all along Malfoy was behind everything and no one believed him!!

I voted HBP, probably because of so much of Snape in it :-). But the 3d and the 4th books would be close in my rank list.

It's the Half-Blood Prince for me, I'm going to re-read it soon. I guess it will be so different to read it now we now that Snape was good (and he's my favourite character).

Perhaps first and last?

Sorry I'll always love book one and movie one. We think of it now and we know so much about the wizarding world, but the beginning, when Harry is rescued from "the worst sort of muggles imaginable". THat's when JK really lays it down, the majesty of the people who believe in Magic and the cruelty of those who would have it taken out of the world. I like the beginning:)
