Does anyone know if the Dumbledore from the picture has the same intelligence and wisdom as the real life DD? If he does then Harry and DD could still talk and discuss the horcruxes. Also, McGonogal wanted to know what Harry and DD were doing. She could ask DD from the portrait or any other portrait from the office so do you guys think the horcruxes will remain a secret to her forever or will they find out?

I'm fairly certain the portraits retain intelligence, knowledge, experience and personality of the subject.

I think one of the first things Dumbledore's portrait will be doing is trying to convince Harry to return to Hogwarts. Rowling has always said the books would cover all seven years at Hogwarts. Not six and a roaming kind of thing for the seventh.

Outside of that, I don't know how much Dumbledore will be around to help Harry figure out the Horcuxes.

I think the portraits may still have the intelligence, knowledge, experience and personality of the subject but I think that they are unable to interfere to much with things that are happening in the real world. It seems that they are used for sending messages and in the case of the fat lady, keeping passwords, more than anything. They just seem to do what they are told and don't interefere, like the portraits of all the old portraits in the headmasters office, not all of them agreed with DD all the time but they always did what he told them to.

Portraits and pictures are not the same. There must be a spell that allows prtraits like DD's to talk, think, send messages... If Harry only took a picture of Sirius that wouldn't be enough. If that's true then he could talk with his parents. And I don't believe that everyone has their portrait. Imagine how much work there is and how many portarit you'll have to take care about. And when they get that portrait? When they die, when they are 17?

You're right about how some of the portraits seem unable to make an impact on what is happening, by doing what they're told, even if they disagree with it, but some of them are able to stand up and refuse to do what they're told. For example, the fat lady was able to refuse to let Sirius Black in.

Lol I just realised I made a mistake in my last post lol.. it was supposed to say 'the portraits of all the old headmasters in the headmasters office'.. woops.

Anyways, by refusing to let Sirius in the fat lady was still doing what she was told and following orders, her instructions were to not let anybody without the password so she didn't let him in. To refuse to do what she was told she would have to let somebody in without the password, and she has never done that before, as seen with poor neville.
