Well that could be different in other countries. And it was pulled out of the dominant gene pool in the Middle-Ages.

Well if I remember right, then there are way fewer witches and wizards then muggles.

hannah abbot, susan bones, mandy brocklehurst, millicent bulstrode, pansy parkinson, padma patil, sally-anne perks.

Lisa Turpin (Ravenclaw).

And in the half a page between "Potter, Harry!" being sorted and "Turpin, Lisa", perhaps there were more unknowns there; surely there would be some Rs or Ss? Maybe not...

Does anyone know about "Moon"? He/she was sorted after Malfoy, do we have a first name? They could have been a girl...

In fact, we know some were missed, I just remembered. It never sorts Dean Thomas... or what's-his-name, the other Hufflepuff guy, not Justin. So we know there are some more. Ernie MacMillan, that's it. Anthony Goldstein for Ravenclaw. Crabbe and Goyle we never saw sorted.

So in Harry's year we have...:

Harry Potter
Ron Weasley
Seamus Finnigan
Dean Thomas
Neville Longbottom
Hermione Granger
Lavender Brown
Parvati Patil
Terry Boot
Anthony Goldstein
Mandy Brocklehurst
Padma Patil
Sally-Anne Perks
Lisa Turpin
Hannah Abbott
Susan Bones
Justin Finch-Fletchley
Ernie MacMillan
Draco Malfoy
Crabbe
Goyle
Nott
Blaise Zabini
Pansy Parkinson
Millicent Bulstrode
Moon (house?)
Morag MacDougal (house?)

So that's 27. 27 x 7 is only 189, but we've already seen many students left out of the Sorting etc...

Whatever the number, it surely isn't any higher than 300. That would mean 43 (42.857...) per year.

Right there there are 8 Gryffs, 6 Ravens, 4 Huffs, 7 Slyths, and 2 unknowns.

If someone wants to search and find out the real list.

I just realised something, if the wizard gene was dominant than there would be no muggle borns because dominant traits, if expressed in the children must have been expressed in at least on of the parents while recesive genes can "hide" for several generations and they only come out when both parents have the gene.

I just realised something else...
The magic gene also can't be recesive! :o :-? This is because when a wizard and a muggle have kids the kids are always wizards.

This would indicate that not only is the wizard gene dominant but it is also carried by lyctic viruses and/or caused by radiation.

And how do you know this? :-? I never heard of that before....Although, I must say that you make this all sound a bit like my math class.

(Muggle) -
(Wizard)+

- x + = -
+ x + = +
- x - = +
Or something like that! :D

Have you ever heard of a wizard and a muggle not producing a wizard?

If the wizard gene were to follow the standard laws of genetics than there would be far more squibs than there are.

You don't hear about it because it's not a book about muggles.

just because you didn't hear about it in the books doesn't mean it didn't happen. you don't hear about any magical people that end up in a mental hospital because they talk about magic in the books, but that doesn't mean it's never happened.

Actualy it is mentioned in the book that squibs are very rare, I'm ,not sure when but at one point harry asks one of the weasleys about filch and he/she says that squibs are a rare occurance and that there has only been one in the weasly family.

just because you have one magical parent and one muggle parent and you're not magical yourself doesn't mean you're a squib.

no it wasn't. harry was one when v tried to kill him, so ginny's year was the last to be born during the time of v.
