Gef the Jarvey?

Postby Petronella_Pettigrew » Tuesday 6 March 2007 11:40:26am

Hi, first post!

I was reading "Fantastic Beasts and Where to find them", and when I read the entry on the Jarvey, I realised that there is actual evidence to support their existance right here in Britain! Maybe JK Rowling was inspired to create them as a way of explaining this extraordinary story...

The Jarvey is said to be able to talk, although mainly limiting itself to rude word or phrases, and looks like 'an overgrown ferret'.

In 1931 on the Isle of Man in the UK, the Irving family were allegedly host to a talking mongoose, who called himself Gef. His choice of words was mostly limited to swearing and joking! He was apparently shot 10 years later by a famer who bought the land where he lived. :(

Wikipedia have a great article on 'Gef the talking Mongoose' if you're interested!

PS This may be clutching at straws, but the paranormal investigator who visited the Irvings to reseach Gef was one Harry P... :o (Harry 'Price', sadly, but who knows...?)

Oh, and another thing - On further research I discovered that Harry Price was a collector of paranormal and magical books...

That's interesting... Now that I think about it I think I've heard the story of the talking mongoose before :-? . Maybe JKR based Harry Potter on this Price fellow, or just got the name from him. Farther reseach is in order...

Oh, yes by the way, welcome to B&O. I'm Simatra and I hope you like it here.

I've never heard of a mongoose in England besides this and probably there are some in zoos. I thought that they were African. And in the North! I wonder if Gef really could talk or did it just sound like that. My dog once said hello when h yawned and it was really funny when he did because he haddjust jumped uo on me!

My cat came into the house the other day, looked around and said, 'Hello?'

I thought that was so funny...
