Well, you have to keep in mind that not everyone else is on the same time you are. This isn't like instant messenger where you hold conversations and get replies within seconds. This is a forum. Some forums get topics that are very popular but may not have posts for hours or days (and in some cases years... but those topics are usually dead).

Double and triple posting may help your post count number, but usually the prefects check your posts and make sure you have 25 non-spam posts before you are sorted into a house.
