Snape's Office

We're told that Snape kept his old office even though he became the Defense teacher, thus teaching in a room well above the dungeons.

In the second book, when Hermione runs into Snape's office to get the boomslang, we're basically told that it was attached, if not inside, the Potions classroom (like we see the Defense room in the movies).

Wouldn't this be slightly awkward? Having your office attached or even within another teacher's classroom?

If it is indeed inside the Potions room, then this would be highly inconvenient when Snape has a planning period and Slughorn does not.

I just don't get this. I know Snape likes things dark and gross (I mean, look at his hair!), and the dungeon room is perfect for this, but it just seems silly.

I don't see Slughorn pitching a fuss about it though, because an office outside of the dungeon would provide more of the creature comforts he enjoys (more warmth, natural light, better air about the place).

Is anyone else just as annoyed about this? I'm finding myself more annoyed about the scenario in the second book, because if Snape's office is in the classroom like I was lead to believe, then it's the only one. I believe that Lupin's office was apart from his classroom because of him seeing Harry walking alone in the hallway during the others' trip to Hogsmeade. And nothing is ever said about McGonagall's office being near her classroom.

what if he kept an office in the dungeons...but not the same? maybe another room in there? or maybe they just magically isolated the office from the potion classroom. or maybe jkr hasn't thought about this very well.

It would also give way for snape to do nasty things to the potions lying out... I doubt that slughorn would like if if snape poinsoned his felix felicis

So, it's the same office in the dungeons. Maybe Sunset|Girl is right and they used magic to seperate the two rooms.

However, I think it's more like JKR didn't think things through properly.
(Like the rooming arangements in the Burrow when extra people stay there...)

anyway i wonder where slughorn office's is? wouldn't he have wanted to have an office near his classroom? i wonder if before snape came to teach potions where was slughorn's office? wouldn't he have liked the same office he had in the old days? or maybe the office of a teacher is supposed to be near the comon room of the house he is head of (i'm talking about the teachers that are head of a house) and maybe that is why snape had to keep his office there. because he is head of slytherin. and slytherin's common room is in the dungeons as far as i can remember.

That's a good point about the common rooms, because McGonagall can always tell if the Gryffindors are having too much fun. But maybe that's their bed chambers and not office? I think it would be weird if their office served as bed chambers too. Snape probably sleeps hanging from the ceiling though.

but probably their bed chambers are close to the office. because it would indeed be rather silly to be the same as the office. think of snape wanting to punish some hufflepuff girl while a pair of pink pijamas with white bunnys lies on an unmade bed, behind him . i wonder if he's got a pink night cap to go with the pijamas?

anyway i completly doubt they have bed chambers like the students where they sleep 5 6 together. though it would again be funny.

Oh, but imagine if they had to share bedrooms like with even just two people. And Defense and Potions always had to share the room! Ahaha! Can't you just see Snape bunking with Moody? Snape claims the bottom bunk, then Moody takes off his wooden leg and prods Snape out of the way complaining about how he can't climb the steps with a wooden leg. I'm going to fix that mental picture in my mind so I can remember it always!

Even though he is now Defence against the Dark Arts teacher, I think everyone still sees Snape as the 'Master of potions' at Hogwarts.

For example:
Who does Dumbledore call for when being poisoned?
How does Slughorn react to Ron's choking? Would Snape have done the same?

As a separate thought, does anyone know where Snape gets his name from? I guess it's his father as we know his mother's name is Prince, but we also know how he rejoices in hating his father (Half-blood), yet doesn't permanently change his name (a la Tom Riddle). Curious.

Perhaps he's just keeping his father's name to maintain a semblance of normalcy? Everyone at school knew him as Snape, so it would appear that something was amiss if he changed his name. Maybe if one day he goes for world domination (or whatever it is that Riddle wants or Snivellus wants) then he might go back to his old nick name.

Besides, it'd be pretty silly calling your Potions Master Professor Half Blood Prince.

maybe it was just a nickname for himself. like mrs weasly gave a nickname to her husband but just when they were all alone. like snape tried by this nickname to improve his self esteem or something. but on the other side is really silly kinda too ...ridiculous? and imagine him...a death eater...go by the name of "half-blood prince"... they might kill him ...though LV is a half-blood too...

although hermione said that the DE's don't mind half bloods that much... although it was when he was at school so he might not have been thinking about that then...

on the other hand to be so proud of his half blood heritage doesn't it seem strange?? maybe he found out LV was a half blood...

I don't think he's proud of beeing a half blood. I think he is proud of his wizard blood heritage. That is why he's the Prince. He is proud to have inheierted his mother's blood. I believe this to be the meaning of his "title". He left only his mother's name which he couldn't have kept officially.
