i always wondered about pettigrew being a gryffindor. doesn't really seem to fit, imo. i don't think he cut off his arm out of bravery, more like out of fear of death! even neville who seems cowardly on the surface really is a true gryffindor inside. perhaps we'll see some gryffindor come out in pettigrew in book 7?

I hate to say this because this might make me feel differently about him, but maybe something really big happened that changed him from brave to cowardly?

I think I remember hearing once that JKR said all four Maurauders were in Gryphindor. Remember, the hat lets people be placed where they ask more often than not. I think Worntail wanted to be in Gryphindor in the hopes of getting the best protection

If we go by Dumbledore's, "It is our choices, rather than our abilities, that make us who were are" (or something close! ), then it might make sense...like what Tanuki said, perhaps Peter chose Gryffindor for the protection. Didn't Sirius say (or maybe it was Remus?) in book 3 that Peter aligned himself with Voldemort because he liked to be sure he was with the biggest bully or some such? Basically, that he didn't rally around Voldemort until he knew Voldemort was strong and he (Peter) could hide behind him. Anyone remember what I'm talking about? If you look at it that way, what Tanuki said really makes sense. After all, Harry had the ability to be in Slytherin, but he got Gryffindor...

Perhaps Myrtle chose her house not based on her abilities but of where she desired to be for a personal reason? Back on topic, Myrtle being the first victim would depend on whether or not Voldemort had killed his dad and grandparents at that point...

Just as a side-note to the Peter issue... I have the same problem withe Percy Weasly. What was he doing in Griffindor?! He's an ambitious, power-hungry, backstabbing pure-blood! He's textbook Slytherine. I suppose since both his parents and both his older brothers were Griffindors he expected to be placed there at age 11 strongly enough that the hat decided to give him a shot there...

I think that hat weighs many factors when deciding ones House. Amongst those are the qualities the Founders valued, but also where you WANT to be. They all have weight.

i don't think he is necesarily a power-hungry or a backstabbing pure-blood. ambitous yes. he wants to make it high. to be recognised for his talents. this might just be his way of wanting to prove that even if the weaslys aren't that rich they are still a family of very capable wizards. he wants to prove he is capable. at least that what he wanted in the begining. i always saw him as the nerd who plays the know-it-all...kinda like hermione. though he took it too far to the end. he became insuffreble and ended up to be moked. (fred and george are just an example). so he though that running away from his family might be his escape pot. though i doubt is is that happy about what he has done. as for power hungry... i think he's too much of an ass-kisser to become an actual powerfull man.

I know we should never go by the movies, because they did add in stuff, take out stuff, but if you look closely, I think she's wearing a Ravenclaw Tie...

I think that he went for what he wanted, he strived for his goals and wouldnt let anyone get in his way. His family htought it was wrong, so he shoved them aside. No one likes him anymore, but he doesnt seem to want to be around his family anyways, so i think he may be satisfied with himself, although i think he was upset when he wasnt the MoM... or am i wrong in thinking that he even wanted to be the MoM, he gave off that to me....

He does tend to act as if gthe kissing of one's ass would be the key to everything.

Gah! Gah at you! In the books there are no house ties. They were plain black robes, all of them. Only prefects and Quidditch captains have school certified badges to wear on their robes. I suppose some might wear a badge to signify what house they're in, but I don't think there's an actual need because despite what more recent interviews say, there are only about 300 students at Hogwarts (using the first books as the evidence of this, and I believe the first books have the correct information, not the later books if there is a discrepency). I went to a high school of the exact same size and I near nearly everyone by name and if we would have had houses, I would have known everyone's house. Harry and Ron just seem a bit too self involved to realize that there are other people (and not without reason, I mean someone's tried to kill Harry in every year), but Hermione and Ginny seem to know who everyone is.

No, I think Harry and Ron know the other students in their year (maybe not other years since they dont really deal with older students in different houses at all. Think aobut how Gred and Forge didn't klnow who Malfoy is) but we are just not told about it since it's unimporant to the story
