i don't know....was he given a direct order "do not tell harry potter!" there are ways to slip through orders and do something else if the person who gives the order is not that smart (i was thinking again about asimov's books where there were few people who could actually master a robot...it was a whole science to know how to give orders so you can get an exact result. but i think i'm alone in talking about asimov's books...has anyone actually read these books?) it's like when you don't lie but you don't mention some facts.
and think about kreacher...how many orders did harry had to give him to make sure it was going to get right (when he ordered him to chase malfoy)

heh, and on kreacher, yeah, he didnt have much of a choice on disobeying, considering he was being watched by Dobby

but we don't know that for sure. and think of kreacher... he can't disobey orders. if he could he would have. i don't think dobby can really stop him for real. he could be powerfull but i don't know if he could actually win...though i really like dobby myself and i would be cheering for him (:* for dobby)

maybe they can bend the orders as much as possible, and as harry covered every aspect of forbidding him telling malfoy he couldn't.

i think unless their masters knew that they were likely to disobey they wouldn't be nearly as careful so maybe the elves could tweak the rules a bit... maybe

Yeah, maybe Lucius or Narcissa got ticked like Sirius and was constantly screaming "GET OUT!" so Dobby did.
