Lily and James Potter

Postby Snow_Crystal » Friday 22 July 2005 11:16:56am

I was just reading mugglenet.com and found these snippets of facts about books 6 and 7:

1) It's very important in the plot that Harry has his mother's eyes, and that her wand was very good for charms
2) Harry's parents' profession will be a big part of the plot.
3) Something HUGE will be revealed about Lily Potter.

These haven't been included in HBP so must be in Book 7. What do you think the huge thing about Lily is?

I am honestly clue less, so not entirely sure why I'm posting - but this is really interesting.
The big question to me is how did she know the spell to sacrifice herself and save Harry? All I know is she gave her love to save him - but how's that work? Why's it not happened before?

Ok this is a really crazy thought but maybe in protecting Harry Lily passed a bit of herself onto him??!! Like how Voldermort gave Harry some of his powers in that transaction Harry also gained some of Lilys? Maybe he will also become very skilled in charms - i dunno its just an idea.

As to what the huge thing about Lily is im not sure, i mean she is muggle born so she cant be related to anyone which was my first though .... maybe there is something more between her and Snape - not too sure. :???:

Just remember, ancient magic isn't dependant on spells and people's actions direct ancient magic

I don't think it was an actual spell. You remember in P/SS when Dumbledore says that love can leave a scar, and Harry touches his forehead? Dumbledore tells him that it's not that kind of a scar. I think the magic that the sacrificial love caused was less actual incantation-magic than the magic that anyone (muggle or magical) can perform solely based on love. It's a little hokey, but I really don't think Lily had the conscious thought "If I do something, then die, then Voldemort's powers will be taken away and Harry will live."

Apparently, this was one of the first times someone had the chance to do something like sacrifice themselves. Firstly, it seems as though most of the victims of Voldemort and the DEs were adults, and therefore somewhat less likely to have someone fully give their life for them (as in, someone's probably more likely to sacrifice themself for a defenseless baby than a formidable fully-grown witch or wizard). Also, the Potters almost certainly knew that the reason they had to go into hiding was that Voldemort was after Harry, not them. So they would have known ahead of time and therefore had made the concious decision to die before they let Voldemort have or harm Harry. However, James was never given the chance to actually make that choice. Since he would have been killed anyway, his death didn't save Harry. Lily actually made the choice, so it was her death that saved him. But I don't think she knew for sure what that would do. Could be she died believing Harry would soon follow. Anyway, all that to say that that seems like a reason to me that it had never happened before.

its got to be something to do with the reason that LV would have let her go free instead of simply killing her, or maybe her and snape?? lol it actually could be anything....

i agree with Athena Appleton. i mean i just think that lily wasn't thinking at all... her only thoughts were going harry's way and that she didn't want him to die. she didn't stop to meditate on what would be the best thing to do next. she just put herself between harry and LV and hopped for the best.
and this worked just like harry growing his hair back (only in a deeper way). it was just magic! and i don't think it could be done again.
as for lily's important part...well as someone pointed out we know almost nothing about what harry's parents were or did from the time they got out of school to their death...and then again, lily was known to be a great wizard so LV might had had an interest in bringing her on his side.(after all he didn't seem to care about the pure-blood thing when he took snape as a DE)

Possibly a squib descendant of Godric Gryffindor was an ancestor of Lily's?

I think the "big" thing (if it really even exists... I try to follow only what Rowling says about what's coming up) has to do with why Lily could have been spared.

I was reading a book called The Tenth Kingdom, and there's an evil queen in there who is trying to find an appropriately evil huntsman, and the test is whether he would sacrifice his own child, and he does. Any chance Voldemort wouldn't have spared her becausse of some kind of positive thing but to see if she would stand between Harry and Voldemort. If she did, okay, he'd kill her and kill Harry anyway, but if she didn't, she would have the lack of love and compassion that would allow her to become a Death Eater, and she was obviously a witch powerful that having her as an ally would be a very good thing for Voldemort.

I also wonder if he could have had some reason for wanting to punish her more so he was going to make her watch Harry get killed and then kill her. After the fact, with the way things happened, he wouldn't have had to tell anyone that. *shrug* I'm probably way off base with both theories....

My other thought: he intended to use Lily as a Horcrux, and therefore wasn't going to kill her.

According to what JKR said in her last interview Voldemort would actually let Lilly go if she gave up Harry, he would let her live. I'm pretty sure the reason why he wanted her to live is that "huge thing" about Lilly that is about to be revealed.

Athena - thats an interesting theory, about turning Lilly into a horcrux o.o hmm, but then i wonder why her... He never gave any options to James...

The color of Lilly's eye already played a big role - that was the only reason why Harry was able to get on a good side of Slughorn.

Quite frankly, given the timelines and such, Voldy could be Lilly's father.
Wouldn't that be a kicker.

Voldemort never loved anyone, so i doubt it highly, considering the time frame, i highly doubt it possible. It would be just too wierd and ironic for JKR also.
