in previous books this was the leg locker curse but in HBP it seems to have the same effect as petrificus totalis

nah doesnt the leg locker curse only lock legs? and the petrificus totalus (or however its spelt) immobilises the entire body.

Yeah, petrificus totalus sporta petrifies the entire body whereas the other one is the Leg-Locker curse...

i just checked, he does use petrificus totalis on the train, i wonder why i thought it was locomotor mortis...
