Imperious Curse..

I believe there was only one Hogsmede trip in this book (due to Katie bell's little incident). And if that's true, how in the name of all that's holy did Malfoy manage to keep her under the Imperious curse? In the fourth book the imposter-moody said Crouch had to be kept at home after a while because he started fighting it off, and that was coming from a far more powerful wizard than Draco.

I will make it a habbit from now on to defend all things JKR has written into her books, because as much as I have doubted her in the past, she always comes through. So I will be playing devil's advocate here. I have several possibilities:
1) Rosmerta is not quite as clever as Crouch Jr. Maybe even, Crouch Jr knew he was cursed, so he could actively fight it, while Rosmerta didn't know she was being controlled.
2) The symptoms/ and circumstances were different. Malfoy was barely controlling her, so that she would go about her business, and only obey him when he called upon her w/ the coin. Crouch was different, because he was being controlled to act differently continuously.
3) The coin may have been conributing to the Imperius Curse's strength.

Or the act that Rosmerta was forced to perform -- passing along a package with a message -- was so seemingly normal and inocuous that she would have no great incentive to fight off the curse, as she might if she were being forced to do something contrary to her character (like openly hurt someone).

Also, she could just be weak-willed and so fearful of Voldemort/Death Eaters that she was unable to muster the willpower to break-free. We really just don't know, but I don't think its a major thing that JK will neccesarily explain - it just is I suppose.

As far as Draco being able to get back and forth to Hogsmeade, could he not have used the vanishing cabinet? He disappeared off the marauder's map for hours at a time.

Also, Gadfly, didn't Rosmerta put Katie Bell under the imperius curse to deliver the package? I don't have the book handy to check, so forgive me if I am wrong. An unforgiveable curse seems like it would be very contrary to character.

I'm sure JK has explanations for these things....

The companion to Malfoy's vanishing cabinet is in Borgin and Burkes, the dark magic shop in London, not in Hogsmeade.

I'm sure Rowling has an answer, she always does.

Draco was keeping her under the curse from the school using the coin. Maybe that was one of the reasons he looked so ragged all the time, using all that energy for the curse. Besides, Hogwarts isn't that far away from Hogsmeade. Also, Snape was helping Malfoy. Snape doesn't need an escort to get off the grounds.

I don't have the brain capacity to keep up with every fact from the wizarding world, so my guesses could be impossible, but I trust Rowling. She has an answer for everything.

Well, Katie definitely refers to being "Imperioused" (p.517). But later Dumbledore talks about Rosmerta being forced to hand the package over to the first Hogwarts student to walk through the dorr unaccompanied -- as though she had no power over making that person walk through the door.

In other words, Katie was under the curse but it seems like Rosmerta was not responsible for it.

Draco is working LV and although we are made to suspect that he will fail, I think he prefered Draco to complete his task so i presume he had some assisstance

I'm sure the bigger picture will be revealed, but i dunno y if DD knew it was going to happen surely he could've added more protection to the castle? He would give his life to save Harry's but not for no reason??

also there were nearly two deaths, ron and katie, and when harry asked about this DD told harry about how inportant the safety of his students was to him but these two only survived through chance. surely the protection could have been better by DD if he knew malfoy was behind them.
