I am finding it hard to believe the Regulus theory because one would A) have to be highly magically gifted to locate the tricks laid by Voldemort as Dumbledore did, B) would also have to have enough magical power near enough equal to Voldemort to cross the water in the boat as hinted by Dumbledore and C) would have to have been quite clever and knowledgable of Voldemort to know of the cave and horcruxes.
Regulus Black just doesn't seem to fit this for me, and also why would Regulus not just sign his full name if the R.A.B. are initials since supposedly Voldemort would know who had done it? Regulus is just too easy a target I think, a little distraction by J.K. I would guess.
I think it could have been Nicholas Flamel who did it, and R.A.B. could just stand for something else such as a place, event or some such. It doesn't have to equal a name lets not forget... after all, Flamel indeed is dead, knew he was going to die after the stone was destroyed, supposedly had a lot of magical power and intelligence and had a couple centuries of wizarding knowledge which could connect the strings just as well as Dumbledore.
What do you think?
