Neville's new power

Postby Manticore » Saturday 25 June 2005 2:03:11am

i posted this in another topic as a response, but i think i should start a theory on it

I think Neville will have much greater power in the upcoming books. Why? in the first book, we see how each wizard is destined for one wand. Harry was destined to the brother wand of voldemort. It seems that Olivander thinks he was destined for it at least, and each wand fits the owner. In the department of mysteries in book 5, Neville breaks his wand, but wait, it was his dad's wand. While his dad was a great wizard, that wand was destined for him, not neville. A wizard can do magic with any wand, but only the best magic with his own. When neville gets his new wand, i think he will be a much better wizard.

This also seems to be true for Ron. After his wand broke in book 2 his magic seemed to improve in book three, though we can't really tell b/c we only saw him with his brothers old wand in book 1

Nikki, Neville is pureblood from what I recall -- someone correct me if I'm wrong. Manticore, I have seen you post this theory a couple of times in response to different things and I agree with you -- we are going to see some really amazing things with Neville in the last two books I'm sure!

Okay, I went a searching because I am currently rereading book 5 for the umpteenth time. In chapter 37 (p. 842) it says:

"He chose the boy he thought most likely to be a danger to him," said Dumbledore. "And notice this Harry. He chose, not the pureblood (which, according to his creed, is the only kind of wizard worth being or knowing), but the half-blood, like himself.

Nikki, could you point out more clearly whereabouts in ch 37 you read that Nevilles mom was a witch and his dad a muggle so I can see for myself. I have completely missed that and it would contradict what Dumbledore says about Neville being a pureblood.

You're right thestral...I posted that very paragraph above (ch 37, p. 842)-- when Harry is insisting to Dumbledore that perhaps Voldemort chose the wrong child, Dumbledore explains to him how Vm had chosen Harry over Neville, and in that he clearly mentions that Neville is the pure-blood. [/i]

Good Point!

Just another reason adding to your theory: Neville improved a lot during the DA sessions. I think that happened with his old wand, but he is gaining strength in many ways. He is skilled with herbs, he found the strength to talk about his parents and he voluntarily joined the team going to the ministry. Great achievements!

thanks for the responses, but first of all, the movies are nothing to go on, and second of all in the movie, it wasn't neville saying that, it was seamus, you can tell the irish accent even if you can't see him, but i think you can

no problem. anyway, i am wondering what is going to happen about neville. i think that he will become alot more focused now, since he has seen so much more. now, he has a target, belliatrix. he knows she is out of jail, and he has experienced her cruelty. what will he do about it? he has to be very careful though, because if he becomes consumed by hate, the dark arts may beckon to him... it will be a balancing act, and i think he will become a very interesting, moody character.

Yeah, but i dont think he will have the courge because in movie 3 he said his boggart was Snape so how is he going to have more courge and face her? Maybe he is more afriad of Bellatrix then Snape now......

Well you're right that in Book 3 Neville didn't have the courage to so much as deal with Snape, but by the time we get through book 5 we've seen a new side of Neville. He's grown more confident, he's gotten better at his use of magic -- we're seeing him grow from a scared little boy into a more confident person that we saw by the end of book 5.

That's a great point! Though I don't think anger will be what consumes him...I think his drive to fight Bellatrix will be based on loyalty -- loyalty to his parents. I only say that because I think it was loyalty to Harry that got him to step it up a notch to begin with.

Either way, I am so eager to see what comes of Neville in this next book.
