I guess that language isn't that much of a problem, I bet they have translation spells...as far as I have the description of the Durmstrang uniforms in mind, they sound stereotypically russian to me. And the name Durmstrang itself...well, it could be referring to the german expression "Sturm und Drang" (storm and stress), but necessarily? To me, it seems a bit far-fetched, especially as I cannot really see the connection between a dark arts school and Goethe. :D

As far as the names are concerned, they are a bit starnge - they have sound slavic but they have these -off's at the end. A Russian name would have an -ov, like Karkarov... -off is something German for me - correct me if I'm wrong, Mistress Siana.

I think that in English the Russian names tend to be written with -off ending. In Slovak translation Karkaroff is Karkarov and Poliakoff is Poliakov, but in English I've often seen Russian names ending in -off. And since Krum is Bulgarian and not Russian, maybe the students are of various Slavic nationalities.

If it was a Russian school it would cover alot of other countries now as Russia is all split up but the school is old.....because the tradition of tri wizard tournaments is old isn't it....

It can't be in Bulgaria. It's a southern country. It must be in Russia. Or maybe J.K.R. doesn't have a map and she doesn't know where Bulgaria is  (*kidding*)

There are some HP dictionaries in the Internet and the ones I read say that Durmstrang is in Northern Europe... but is it actually mentioned in the books that it is in Europe?

Don't know. :???: Do people in Northern Europe have names that end with "off" or "ov"?

hmm... don't think so. BUT: the nationality of the school teachers and students doesn't have to do with the location of the school. I mean, Karkaroff could possibly be Russian and still the school could be in Scandinavia.

I was actually wondering if the school could be in Asia. And it shouldn't be in the North, also in the areas to the South it can be around -40 °C in winter (and +40 in summer).

How can Krum say "it's colder where I live" when he lives in Bulgaria? It's warmer than in England.

Hey, that's a good point. Maybe the school is in the mountains.

Yeah!! I didn't even think of "mountains" at first, but that could work, right? And they do need to hide it from muggles, so may be mountains were a good idea.

Are there any mountains in Bulgaria? Im really sorry, Im bad in geography T_T

Yes, that would work because Hogwarts is also hidden in mountains in the Scottish highlands isn't it...
