Durmstrang - where is it?

Postby Phinea Rogue » Monday 25 October 2004 11:08:19am

Has it ever been mentioned where Durmstrang is? It sounds German, but most of the students we have met so far have Slavic surnames - Poliakoff, Krum (Bulgarian), Karkaroff... It may be somewhere in the north, because "the days are very short in winter", as Krum says. On the other hand, days are always very short in winter, at least here where I like (Central Europe) and this is not far to the north. And as for the language they speak at school, can it be German (Germany does not seem far in the north either) or some Slavic language? I have heard an opinion once that it may be formerly an Austro-Hungarian empire school and then the language can be German, as that was the language spoken there by everyone (besides Latin).

I read a theory on anotehr forum long ago that it could be in Northwestern Russia, unfortunately I have forgotten the proofs.

I always wondered where Durmstang is too. Their robes are really thick, which makes me think Russia. But the names sound Central Europe-y. But according to Krum, they have really short days in the winter. Compared to Hogwarts? That makes me think they're farther north than Great Britain. So I vote for Russia, or maybe Norway or something. Iceland? *is quite ignorant when it comes to geography*

I don't think its iceland. To me Russia sounds like the kind of place that would have insisted on having its own school at the time when the schools would have been created.....

It could be in Bulgaria, since the Durmstrang students all speak Bulgarian.

I agree with Croconaw, its prob. Bulgaria. Even though Scellanis has a good point...they prob. would insist on having everything of their own.

I've always pictured it as some kind of uncharted island, unseeable to the muggle eye. Probably located near the Scandinavian countries or Russia. Basically like it's own little country.

Well if this country has such a famous school, it should be a big country, at least bigger than a small island...

Yeah, thats one of the reasons why I though Russia...I mean no doubt other places have schools but only powerful countries would have the big famous schools I would have thought. Russia strikes me as the kind of place that would.
