Basilisk killings

Postby Shadow » Monday 24 February 2003 11:29:52pm

Why did Myrtle die? How come she just didn't get petrified since she had her glasses on, and she didn't look it right in the eye? I mean, Justin saw the basilisk through Nearly Headless Nick, and Coiln through his camera lense, which were just little bits of see-through stuff. Wouldn't people with glasses have less to worry about?

Nice point. but if she didn't have her glasses on she wouldn't have seen the eyes clearly.

I think you'd get petrified if you see the eyes but with the image distorted. In Myrtle's case the glasses made the eyes nice and clear. :-)

Myrtle didn't have her glasses on, actually. She spent the day in the bathroom crying without her glasses on. :)

I'm pretty sure Myrtle looked the basilisk right in the eyes. I somehow remember her telling about how she went to turn on the sink faucet, and she saw two eyes there, so that would imply that she looked directly into them. I'll hunt up the passage as soon as I get home.

if myrtle didn't have her glasses on...then shouldn't she not be able to see clearly and therefore not be killed...but who cries w/ their glasses on???

But the fact is, she still saw the basalisk with her own two eyes.

I reckon that she would have been wearing her glasses, because thought she peobably took them off to cry, when she came out of the toilet to 'tell of the boys voice that she could hear' she probably would have put then back on, right? cause otherwise she wouldnt' have been able to see who it was...

And glasses clarify stuff, whereas cameras distort the image *note, it's smaller, etc* What you see in the eyebit is a reflection, due to physics making it thus. *so not explaining the process!*

Also, nearly headless nick would have distorted the view big time... note in the movies how you can see through him, but not very well...

that's just my thinking though! hehehe

I'm not sure the basilisk kills you only when you see its eyes clearly, I think it is directly; so Myrtle must have take her glasses while crying and saw the basilisk, but not clearly, and that's why she can't tell Harry how seh died, she only remembers yellow eyes, maybe if she had the glasses when seeing the basilisk would petrify or at least see the big snake form.

Okies, but form the ghost discussion in another thread, if people stay how they are when they died when they are ghosts, then why is she wearing her glasses as a ghost???

I think she had them on, but the reason she only remembers the eyes is that it all happened so quickly. and when you look at someone, the first thing you look at is their eyes... *unless you're one of those guys who stop at the chest...*

No I'm not (At least not consciously; no, really I look people to the eyes (specially girls, I feel more confident like that))

And even if you see first the eyes, it isn't the only thing you see, from some distant you can actually look very good the whole face.
And maybe ghost can take off the glasses too.
