Professor Snape said, "Today, we will be making a potion which, if succesful, shall make you temporarily incorporeal. But, if you do it wrong, you will know. If you know you did it wrong, and you are affected in any way, you are not under my control as to what you do to solve the problem. You will each make a potion, and your partner will test it by drenching themselves with it. If it works, you should be able to walk through desks and chairs."
There were murmurs about what might happen if it went wrong.
"Partners will be Inter-house, and will be decided by use of these hats," Snape said. "One is for Slytherin, the other for Gryffindor. The first team is Brown and...Parkinson. The next team is..."
And so he went making teams. Ron and Crabbe were a team, Harry and Goyle were a team, and so on until the last team was formed. "And by process of elimination, the last team is Granger and Malfoy."
"No way!" Malfoy told Crabbe and Goyle. "I don't want some disgusting Mudblood touching my stuff, and I don't want to try anything she has for me."
"Unfair! I think that hat is rigged!" Hermione told Harry and Ron.
"That may be true, but just grin and bear it, and don't lose it," Harry told Hermione.
"The ingredients are in the cupboard," Snape said, "and the instructions," he said, tapping the board with his wand, "are on the board. You have until the end of class. Go."
Scurrying was heard as peoplescrambled to get the ingredients. After that, not much noise was made, because the Gryffindors and Slytherins hated each other. After half an hour, most people were almost done, putting in their last ingredient, half a cup of lemon juice. As Hermione was applying her lemon juice to her potion, Neville asked, "Hermione, how much lemon juice do we need?"
"Half a cup," she replied, while unknowingly pouring the whole cup of lemon juice in the cauldron. Meanwhile, across from her Malfoy thought, "This will be a way to humiliate that Mudblood scum." He poured the entire cup of lemon juice in the cauldron. They both took a flask and scooped a sample of their creation. Hermione and Malfoy were one of the first to finish and when they grabbed the other person's flask, Hermione told him, "Bottoms up." Malfoy replied, "Yeah, well, if its been poisoned, you'll be in heaps of trouble." They poured the flask's contents onto themselves. Then, Hermione tried to walk through a desk, but failed, while Malfoy tried to walk through his chair, but to no avail. "Hey, you messed mine up!" they told each other.
Unfortunately for them, they weren't aware that the effects of the botched potions were starting to take place.
