You Drive Me Crazy Half the Time

Postby DucksRMagical » Monday 24 November 2008 3:59:47am

I wrote this song fic for a challenge on Harry Potter Fan Fiction. It involves Taylor Swift's song, I'm Only Me When I'm With You. The words in italics are the lyrics.

I'm not sure if anyone's ever posted a song fic here, but it's basically a one chapter story with the lyrics to a song embedded into it. The story is based on the song. If you've got the song available, it's cool to listen to it as you read.

Questions, comments, and general reviews are always appreciated!

Disclaimer- I don't own Harry Potter or Taylor Swift's 'I'm Only Me When I'm With You'.

You Drive Me Crazy Half the Time

Hermione sighed and got up out of bed. She glanced at her alarm clock, which read two in the morning. It was the same every night. Every night since the Battle. She couldn't sleep. She tossed and turned thinking about anything and everything. Then the tears would come. The tears for Moody, Fred, Lupin, Tonks, and even Colin Creevey. It hadn't really hit her until a few days after the Battle, but when it did, it hit her hard.

Now, here she was in her parents' house, still crying months later. Of course the first thing she had done after the Battle was go to Australia and find her parents. She reversed the memory charms and explained everything. They were shocked. They had spent everyday since worrying about Hermione. But they had no idea she was staying up half the night.

Hermione opened her blinds and stared out the window at the star strewn sky. The nearly full moon was illuminating her entire backyard, sending light down upon her old swing set and the tree she had spent hours climbing as a child. How long ago that all seemed now. So much had changed.

It wasn't only the Battle that Hermione was thinking about either. She was also thinking about Ron. Ronald Weasley, the boy who had driven her mad ever since first year. Hermione sighed again and rubbed her eyes. Why was she thinking about him so much? The past few nights she had thought about him more than the Battle. Merlin, she thought, she had just seen him a few hours ago! Why was he constantly on her mind? The few dreams she had always centered around Ron, as well. It had just been one kiss! One kiss shared in the middle of an emotion ridden battle! It didn't mean anything, did it?

Hermione shook her head to clear her thoughts, but it didn't work. She knew the answer. The kiss had meant something. Of course it had! It had to have, right? People didn't just kiss other people for no reason at all. And it had felt good. A zing of excitement had flowed through her veins as her lips met his. It had meant something.

She liked Ron. Really liked him. Deep down, Hermione knew she had liked Ron for a long time. And he knew it, too. Why else would he have been so jealous during the Yule Ball? Why hadn't he just asked her first? He was always just standing there, like he was waiting for her to make the first move.

But Hermione was waiting for him to make the first move. I'm sick of it, she thought, sick of waiting for him to make the first move. The two of them hadn't spoken about the kiss at all during the past few months. In fact, they acted like it hadn't happened. Every time Hermione saw Ron, she hoped he would say something. But he never did.

That was it, Hermione thought as she stood up, I'm making the first move. She didn't care that it was past two in the morning. Didn't care what Mrs. Weasley would say when she turned up at the Burrow in the wee hours of the morning. She couldn't wait any longer. She had to find out if Ron wanted this to happen or not.

Hermione tiptoed down the stairs so as not to wake her parents, jotted them a quick note so they wouldn't worry, and turned on the spot. She disappeared from the kitchen with a loud crack.

Friday night beneath the stars,
in a field behind your yard,
you and I are paintin' pictures in the sky.
And sometimes we don't say a thing;
just listen to the crickets sing.
Everything I need is right here by my side.
And I know everything about you
I don't wanna live without you.

The backyard of the burrow was quiet. The only sound was a few crickets chirping. Hermione walked quickly through the grass, dodging a few gnomes along the way, and paused in front of the door to the kitchen. There was a light on. Hermione wasn't the only one who couldn't sleep. She hoped it wasn't Mrs. Weasley. Hermione would prefer not to meet up with her at the moment.

She quietly opened the door and inched inside. She stopped abruptly when she saw that it was Ron sitting at the table.

"Bloody Hell, Hermione!" he shouted as he tried to mop up the tea he had just spilled, "What the hell are you doing here?"

Hermione was suddenly nervous. Why had she done this again? It was stupid. She should have just waited until morning. He was going to think she was mad.

"Er, actually," she muttered, "I was hoping I could talk to you."

"To me?" Ron looked at her curiously, "What about?"

"Could we go outside?" Hermione asked, "I'd rather not wake your mum."

"She's probably already up," Ron answered as he stood up, "I don't think she's slept much the past few months."

Like me, Hermione thought. She didn't say anything as Ron followed her out of the kitchen and into the backyard. She walked slowly towards the broom shed, trying to think of what to say. Why hadn't she just thought of what to say before she went to the Burrow? This wasn't like her, to do something rash and spur of the moment.

"Hermione, are you ok?" Ron asked awkwardly.

Hermione turned around. "Yes, I'm fine, Ron. I just need to tell you something."

"Well, what is it?" he asked.

"Just sit down," Hermione said as she sat on the dew laced grass.

Ron sat down next to her and stared at her. "This is really odd, Hermione."

"Just listen," Hermione groaned and took a deep breath. "We-we haven't talked at all about that kiss during the Battle," she blurted out.

Ron blinked. "What's there to talk about? We kissed."

Hermione groaned. "Yes, that's what we need to talk about! I need to know if it meant something to you! Because, well, it meant something to me!"

I'm only up when you're not down.
Don't wanna fly if you're still on the ground.
It's like no matter what I do.
Well you drive me crazy half the time;
the other half I'm only trying to let you know that what I feel is true.
And I'm only me when I'm with you.

"Er, well," Ron stuttered, "I-I think it meant something, I guess."

"You guess?" Hermione stared at him. Why was he always so difficult? "What does that mean?"

"I dunno," he shrugged.

Hermione squeezed her eyes shut and tried not to let the tears that were boiling up fall. What was it about him that made her act this way? She was usually so rational, how could a bloke do this to her? Why wouldn't he just give her a definitive answer?

"Well I need to know!" Hermione shouted, "I need to know, Ron! I'm sick of the way we don't talk at all about this! I have to know if you like me! Because-because I can't wait around forever for you!"

Hermione turned away and rubbed her eyes. It was no use. She couldn't stop the tears. Ron wasn't saying anything. Why wasn't he saying anything? She didn't think she could stand it if he said he didn't like her. She didn't want to be with anyone else. Hermione just wasn't herself around other boys. Viktor, well, Viktor was a nice guy, but Hermione always felt like she couldn't open up around him. It wasn't like that with Ron. She was comfortable with Ron.

"Hermione, I," Ron began, "I, I do like you."

"You, you do?" Hermione wiped her eyes and turned back to Ron. He was looking down at the grass.

"Yes, Hermione, I do," Ron said quietly.

Just a small town boy and girl
livin' in a crazy world.
Tryin' to figure out what is and isn't true.
And I don't try to hide my tears.
The secrets or my deepest fears.
Through it all nobody gets me like you do.
And you know everything about me.
You say you can't live without me.

"Then why haven't you said anything the past few months?" Hermione cried, "I thought you didn't want that kiss to mean anything!"

Ron continued to stare at the ground for a few moments before responding. "Hermione, the past few months have been insane. I didn't think you'd want to talk about us! You ran off to find your parents as soon as the Battle was over and I didn't see you for days and now you spend all your time working to rebuild Hogwarts and reorganize the Ministry and-"

"What else do you think I would do?" Hermione shouted, "Of course I had to go find my parents! And do you honestly think I wouldn't help rebuild Hogwarts and reorganize the Ministry? You've been doing the same thing! We're around each other all day! You could have taken ten minutes to talk to me about something other than the Battle and Harry and Hogwarts and the Ministry!"

"Well, sorry, but I've been preoccupied!"

"We all have!" Hermione shouted, "But we have to take time for ourselves!"

"I didn't think you wanted that," Ron muttered.

"Well I do, Ron, I do," Hermione sighed, "But I'd rather have that time with you."

I'm only up when you're not down.
Don't wanna fly if you're still on the ground.
It's like no matter what I do.
Well you drive me crazy half the time;
the other half I'm only trying to let you know that what I feel is true.
And I'm only me when I'm with you.

"What about Krum?" Ron muttered.

"Viktor?" Hermione raised her eyebrows and groaned, "He's just a friend. Nothing more. He's not the kind of guy I want to go out with."

When I'm with anybody else it's so hard to be myself.
Only you can tell.

"And what kind of bloke would that be?"

Hermione smirked, "The kind with red hair and the emotional range of a teaspoon."

Ron turned to her and grinned. He leaned his head in and planted his lips on Hermione's. Hermione wrapped her arms around his neck and returned the kiss. She was grinning when they pulled apart.

"Nice night to sleep outside," Ron yawned and laid down.

"You're mad," Hermione laughed and laid down next to him.

"Yeah, but you like my madness."

"I do," Hermione grinned and cuddled up next to him.

Hermione rested her head against Ron's chest and sighed as he put his arm around her shoulder. His snoring filled the air a few minutes later and Hermione smiled to herself. She did it. She had made the first move and it had worked. Hermione closed her eyes and fell into the most restful sleep she had had since the Battle.

That I'm only up when you're not down.
Don't wanna fly if you're still on the ground.
It's like no matter what I do.
Well you drive me crazy half the time;
the other half I'm only trying to let you know that what I feel is true.
And I'm only me
Who I wanna be
Well, I'm only me when I'm with you
With you
Uh huh
Yeah
