Merge the HBP section with the rest of the forum?

Do you have any suggestions for this board or for the Broomsticks And Owls site?

Merge the HBP section with the rest of the forum?

Postby Broccoli » Wednesday 25 January 2006 12:21:53pm

It's been a long time since the 6th book was released. Maybe it's time to merge the HBP related sections with the corresponding old sections? There is a poll in the Great Hall about it, so far there is nobody here who hasn't read the new book. So, Paul, what do you think?

In my opinion if you haven't read HBP you're now in the same boat as the people that haven't have OoTP or the others...

I think a half year is enough, personally...

The only thing that is bothering me is that some people read it in translation and they are only being released now, like the Spanish version recently... But then again, those people will probably not come to an English speaking forum. I guess we have none so far.

Seeing as the poll is still 100% of members having read the Half Blood Prince, I think it is indeed time to merge the Half-Blood Prince threads into the main forum as a whole. Part of the reason for having kept it so long is that same concern for visitors from countries where the book may have released later than the originall but the 100% vote (or votes I guess seeing as there were two threads :-) ) seems to indicate that the way is clear to do the merge without having too much fear of spoiling anything for members or hopefuly visitors in general.

Checking back, we gave it just under 5 months after the Order of the Phoenix was realeased before the Order of the Phoenix area was merged into the whole forum, so the 6 month (and a few days) period after the Half Blood Prince seems certainly a reasonlably long enough timescale.

Similar to the way things worked for the the Order of the Phoenix, I'll set up a Prince-Free Room this weekend (at the same time as doing the merge) just in case there are any current or future members who haven't read the Half-Blood Prince, and will post a small spoiler warning and pointer to the Prince-Free room at the top of the forum.

WHEE!

So the threads in the HBP sections will just go into their respective places?
(theories to the theories section and fanfiction to the fanfiction setion?)

Will the forum go down when the merge happens?

Well that's good!

Will the forum be down?

Erm.. yeah, well everything seems to be coming together then... the new server and everything, HBP sections being merged...

Awesome! Will the moderators of the HBP sections be transferred too?

Yes, it'll be Half-Blood Prince theories to main-forum Theories, Half-Blood Prince Books to main-forum Books etc. The forum won't need to go down for the merge - it'll be just like a normal moving of threads but on a larger scale. I've posted something about Half-Blood Prince Moderator places in the Moderator's Forum. Basically the default choice (unless Moderators request otherwise) will be for Half-Blood Prince Moderators to move to the respective area in the main forum. However, if HBP Mods wish, they can choose between any forum. Unlike normal Moderator-place awards, HBP Mods will be able to choose regardless of how many Mods exists in the forum they're interested in.

Sincere thanks to all Half-Blood Prince Moderators for the sterling contribution to the forum since book 6 was released. I think the HBP areas have been kept orgainsed and running brilliantly. And much recognition and thanks to all Mods over the whole forum who have ensured that any stray posts with HBP spoilers were quickly caught and transported safely to the HBP area.

:double jump:

That's a great idea...
Plus it means that the normal forums will have more moderators as well as a bonus. :-)

Indeedy - things are looking quite nicely moderated in most places now, and I've still got a further round of Moderator appointments waiting to be granted in the Sorting Hat too.

All the adjustments to merge the Half-Blood Prince section into the main forum have now been done. Enjoy the newly combined BaO. :-)

Yeah, I was quite surprised myself, being that I wasn't here for the discussion about merging. I think it's a good idea, though. I personally, would not go on a HP forum if I haven't read all the books. People post spoilers everywhere. Plus, it shouldn't be that hard for them to move over to the "Prince-Free Room", or just read the book.

I can't see the new room being remarkably popular or anything. Probably only as much as Phoenix-free was.

Nevertheless I've posted a thread in there already:

"What do you think will happen in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince?" or something similar.

I suppose it's only fair.
