Chapter 9: The midnight duel

Postby *Riley* » Saturday 23 August 2008 5:02:10am

Welcome back, to another great discussion, this week we will discuss the many attributes this chapter throws at us.
Quidditch is introduced, and Harry learns to fly, and he does it surprisingly well.
He gets caught by McGonogall and is lead away, he meets with Oliver Wood and is acepted as the youngest seeker in 100 years!
Later, Malfoy challenges him to a duel, Harry accepts out of spite, and Ron is his 'second'. They creep out only to be followed be Hermione, and Neville.
Harry finds Malfoy stood him up, and Filch was alerted, so thus begins the mad goose chase.
They bolt away only to go into the third floor, and they meet Fluffy. They only barely escape and they run back to their common room without a second glance.
I thought we could discuss, Have you ever snuck away and seen/heard something you weren't supposed to, either a surprise, or a mean comment?
And, if you could meet one animal from the wizarding world which would it be ? Please remember, keep the answers spoiler free.

xx Distortia & Riley :)

Thanks Riley for organising our next discussion!

Hmmm.... have I ever snuck away and heard or seen something I wasn't supposed to? Let's see...
One time I put the tape recorder on to catch out the Easter Bunny... And when my sister and I played it back, first we heard my mom and dad watching tv and talking.. and then they went to bed and it was quiet.. and then we heard 'scampering' sounds and crunching! The next morning there was chocolate and the carrot we left out had be nawed! lol... also, we were being naughty one night, laughing and talking when we should have been asleep at my Grandma's house, and all of a sudden, no balony! There was Rudolf's silouette in the window, red nose and all! Ya that's right! St. Nick knows when you've been sleeping, he knows when you'r awake! he sends out his reindeer pose to check on you! My sisters and I were under the covers freakin out.. and when we came back out.. he was gone. We went right to sleep after that! lol

Can't think of any real juicy things I should not have heard just now.. probably because I tend not to go looking or am too flakey to listen! hahah.. looking forward to your responses people!

And if I could meet one animal from the wizard world.. it would be Hedwig! :) Harry's snowy owl. And for entirely different reasons, I'd like to meet Scabbers... :cat:

Sorry Riley, had to edit your post! Spoiler! We haven't met those magical creatures yet.

And not sure what you mean... my mind playing tricks on me? I'm Canadian and I'm slow.. eh! lol

And I have heard something I wasn't suppose to... lol. I was on the phone, and the person hung up on me, and then they picked up again and dialed another friend's phone number and I recognised it (because I hadn't hung up the line didnt' disconnect) and she was all like, "Hang up!".. so I did. but I knew from then on that the two of them were in on the 'gag' together...

(eek.. brings back bad memories of so called friends in primary school.. I'd love to wring their necks today!)

sorry for double post!

I know what you mean now Riley! lol took a few months! But now it's christmas time, I wanted to say, I swear it was Rudolf I saw! My nanny (my mum's mum) it was at her house, and my mom tries to tell me it was her and I am like, it could not have been! It was on a balcony where there was no ladder. I think we should just all be good, just in case! It's funny because it's a tradition in our family to put an onion in our stockings first up when they get hung up (for christmas) and then if you're good it gets taken out on Christmas night and replaced with presents. one year my mom and dad forgot to fill their stockings and us kids are like, were you bad, mummy and daddy? lol the things we do.. now I get to make some traditions....

To all others who come to read this PLEASE NOTE!!! Post a discussion question in here any time you want! Us mods don't have to be the only ones posting the question. Just don't add spoilers. (talk only about what has happened so far in the book)

Thanks! Glad to see so many people are looking, this topic has had like 200+ views!

I read on JKR's website that in the original draft, Dean accompanied the trio instead of Neville. How do you guys think this would have affected the way events played out?

I think it was of changed the way the book read enormously.
I will not post spoilers here as this is the only place they're not allowed... I think.
Neville would of been replaced with Dean which is kind of troubling. Dean's background was important but JK Rowling decided to place the 'burdan' upon poor innocent, moon-faced Neville.
Do you think it would of affected the way people thought of Neville if he hadn't accompanied the trio?

How exciting! I heard somewhere that Neville's bday is the same as Harry's? is that true? Wasn't mentioned in this chapter and I hope that isn't spoiling anything. And besides, it was more comical that Neville was there anyway, as he was stuck outside after forgetting passwords etc. I think it was important to mix these guys together because they were all misfits or seperate entities in need of development, and together, they really started the story of how true friendships are forged; by frightening or embarassing experiences! Throughout the books, I related the friendships formed in the book to my own relationships in school. JK writes the teenaged mind soooooo well! I 'll never forget being a teenager.. mad mad times! stll having flashbacks!
