Protect your email address

Postby Paul » Saturday 26 June 2004 7:16:36pm

If you've got the "Always show my e-mail address" setting under your profile set as "yes", it may be worthwhile considering setting it to "no".

It appears than recently, an email harvester (probably a bot) has obtained some members' email addresses from the memberlist. No breach of security occurred or was necessary for this as some members choose to have their email addresses publicly viewable (see the first paragraph above).

From the information I've received, it appears that spammers have been sending viruses to members using a faked "from" address which makes it appear that the email has come from a fellow board member. Beware that you should never trust for certain that an email comes from the person named as the "from" person. This can very easily be faked. You need to check the headers.

Be careful out there!

This has happened to me also. I actually had my e-mail adress removed from my profile because I have been recieving lots of infected messages.

I never really realized that it was so easy to have your system maliciously infected but I have learned.

thanks for the post paul.

yes, this happened to me. first i recieved an email from what appeared to be a member of the board, but deleted it because of its suspected nature. then i was notified that i had sent an infected email to another member of the board, which i did not do. please do changfe this setting in your profile for your own protection and the protection of the other members of the board. If you want someone else to know you email address, PM or IM them, it is much safer.

Yes, in the email or msn messenger slot, it's best to put 'PM me if you want it'

I strongly recomend everyone ignores emails from me, I very rarely send anything and the only person I'd be likely to email here would be Paul anyway....

I already knew my email was being faked, I get heaps of replies and mail delivery errors about it, not much you can do though because if it aint from this forum then someone will find some other way to get it.

I don't think mine got taken from here though

hmm....well, i haven't gotten any strange e-mails, because if i do, my filter doesn't let any through unless i've e-mailed them in the past. so, i'm not too worried about it. but, of course, my luck, it will happen to me...

Thanks Paul!

I just changed that option.

I was actually quite concerned why would zledm007 send me a virus, but I'm glad it's all worked out now.

thanks once again!

if you have hotmail you should set the junk mail filter so that only things that have passed the screening test should get through.

I treat my computer like eggs (that sentance sounded weird). I immediately set my option to "No" before I even began posting. It is advisable that you don't show your YIM, AIM, ICQ, or MSN, as some sick demented people may try to... you know, not do good things to say the least.
