"The Passion Of The Christ"

Postby TDM » Saturday 27 March 2004 7:06:31am

okay, not to start any religious turmoil, but i saw the movie this last night, and i would have to say i loved it. i'm not the kinda guy to go watch a movie about religion, either, so maybe that tells you something. the reason i didn't put this in the other movies topic is that i felt that it could stand as a topic on it's own. so, if anyone else has seen it, please tell what you thought of it. me, being a Catholic and pretty much knowing the entire story by heart picked up on the little things, but others might go see it for the fact that they want to.

my conclusion: if you are even remotely religious, go see it. it will change your view on a lot of things.

Here's the thing:
I like Mel Gibson and I have found that even the graphic stuff (* The Patriot, *Brave Heart etc...) he does is really quite good...

but I do not need to have the passion of Christ displayed for me on the movie screen.
I am very aware of how horrible it was for Jesus when he was crucified. Every year I sung at church (*Catholic for anyone wondering) during holy week and even though I knew the music backwards and forwards and had rehersed I still always cryed on Good Friday.
What Christ suffered for us has always struck me very deeply and watching it gorily (*sp) depicted before my eyes is unnecessary. It will not strengthen my faith, but it would most assuradly gross me out or disturb me.

I´ll probably watch it out of pure curiosity to see what its like as a movie. I know enough about the bible´s version beacause I live Spain which is a country with a looong catholic tradition.

Well, I intend to see it, but as a movie. I'm Catholic, and very much aware of the entire story (Portugal also has a very long Chatolic history). But I'd like to see how they put it in a movie...

i feel that it's portrayed very well by Mel Gibson and Jim Caviezel does a good job playing Jesus. but, it is very gory, bloody, and violent. it is not for the faint of heart. but, they have the Devil in there, and he walks around, tempting Jesus to save himself. once again, it's a good movie.

It's coming to the croatian movies on th 1st of April and I don't knoe if I'll see it. I'd like to see it but probably not in the cinema because the screen is so big and som scenes are so violent and I'm easily scared.
probably at home on DVD

I'm not much into religious films (an atheist) and this seems so violent, I can't go to see it to a cinema. Maybe I'll watch it later on DVD, alone, but definitely not with so many people around (I would cry, I don't want anyone to see that). Anyway, is it as bad as it's described? I mean as violent?

Umm, I heard mixed reviews about it. I have seen many films/documantaries plus I go to chucrch every Sunday, so I know the story pretty well. I heard from some people that the moive was awesome, and was compleatly historically accurate, and from other people I heard that the movie had some flaws. I dont know which side to believe since I have never seen it, but I want to go and watch it so I can judge it by myself.

I'm an atheist too. But that's not the reason why I won't watch it. I just heard very bad critics about it and I am very critical about films anyway. It's supposed to be not much story but rather a lot blood and torture. And I don't like that kind of films anyway. I think that Hollywood movies in general get worse every year, but that's only my humble opinion.

for me, it was more bloody than i had thought it was. in the Scourging of the Pillar (where they whip him), they start whipping him with thin wooden rods. they expect him to fall down after that, but then gets back up. so, they pull out a baseball batlike stucture with nails sticking out of it, but their supervisor says no. so then they pulls out whips with hooks on the end that can stick into solid wood, and they start beating him with that. (they counted the lashes in Aramaic, and it sounded remarkably like spanish, so i kept up, and they went with at least 70). but, the whips were pulling bits of skin off of his body, and you couldn't tell what color his skin was on his back anymore. then, the supervisor said that it was enough. i was glad because i thought that Jesus was done getting whipped. but then, they flipped him over and started whipping him on his frontside! i was rather appalled at it.

to answer your question, it was VERY violent, but not the reason i liked it so much.

Ok, after reading Dragon Master's last comment, I'm POSITIVE I won't be seeing it. I wouldn't be able to hold down my last meal watching that, no matter how symbolic it is. :o
