Jesus, I've learned french for five years, and now, a year after I graduated, I can hardly read 'le petit prince' without major problems. But I'm proud of myself, I've been to Amsterdam quite recently (Greetings to you, Hagger!), and for the first time, I haven't been recognised as a german at some point.

Ahoj meaning "Ad honorem Jesu" is interesting, that's possibly why the word has made it into so many languages.

Germans have this funny tendency to "americanize" everything, trying to use a lot of english words, but unfortunately, they do it wrong. For example, they call a mobile phone "Handy", and some time ago, there was this company that wanted to create a new word for the old-fashioned "rucksack". They seem to have thought something like "well, they're bags, they wear them close to the body, and, as english is in fashion, why don't we call them "bodybags"? *cough*
Do they do things like that in your countries, too?

Эй,русские отзовитесь!
Привет(privet) means -hello- in Russia and До свидания(dosvidania)
means-Good bye-
I think it is simple to learn.
By the way,I have been learning french for three years....My mother is an English teacher so I know English rather well(but don`t pay attention to some mistakes, please! ;) )[/quote]

I think it adds an extra bye to all translations of good-bye, because it translates it literally: good + bye.
