I have a question. Earlier JRRRpwling, you said that some people said that LOTR was a copy of Star Wars after they saw the movie, how can they even think this? Even if they thought that LOTR was written after SW I don't see how they can see this.
Anyways, HP and the LOTR have several differences in plots. I'll list a few
1) Harry goes from the worst to the best (like cinderella I know)
2) Harry is fighting to avenge his parents while Frodo is fighting to save the world
3) Harry enjoys the turn his life has taken while it is my impression that Frodo would rather have stayed in the Shire
There are many more but I won't continue.
Although I really don't think that JKRowling is guilty of pledgerism I can see your point. Harry does have a group of friends helping him achieve his goal much like Frodo and Gimli, Legolas, etc. and Harry has an older, wiser person aiding him on his journey, for Harry this is Dumbledore and for Frodo this is Gandalph. I'm sure there are more similarities but I can't really think of them right now (I'm very tired and about to go to bed). These however are only a few small points that are common in many stories before and after Tolkien, at least that is my belief. I mean really a group of friends fighting against evil for one reason or another who have a wise usually old someone aiding them. One major series that comes to mind immeadiately is the Narnian Chronicles. Now I'm not sure which series, LOTR or NC, was written first but the two authors were in fact good friends and I have never heard of either of them admitting to being influenced by the other.
JRRRowling I would like to ask you to keep in mind that all authors are influenced by eachother. It is becoming increasingly difficult for and author to write something that no one else has ever written because so much has been written. No offense towards Tolkien, for I greatly admire him and consider him one of the greatest minds of all time, but it was far more easy to write something that no one else had then than it is now. Just as it will be harder to be original in 50 years then it is now. All in all, all writers unless they have never read a story, watched a movie, or seen, heard, or whatever, anything with a plot, have been influenced by those who wrote before them whether they realize it or not. I don't recal JKRowling every saying that she was influenced by no authors who have ever written a story in the history of mankind, or some thing similiar. She has most definately been influenced by other authors. If she ever does make a statement of the like please inform me and I will imeadiately loose all respect I have for her as a writer.
I would also like to add that those who you called "ignorant movie goers" (I think that was the term you used) are no more ignorant then yourself. They are judging two movies and not giving credit to the books from wich they derived. The only difference is that you know there are books that the Harry Potter movies are based on but do not care to read them while those who made that statement were not, most likely, aware of the fact that the LOTR was based on a book and believed that the movies were just movies someone came up with. Please read the books before you make such a serious accusation as JKRowling is guilty of pledgerism. Basing you argument on the movies means that you do not know the details or entire plot of series and therefore have an invalid argument. It is as if you watched Tuck Everlasting and wrote a book report on the book. You would get a totally different story which lost the moral, meaning, or life lesson (whatever you prefer to call it).
I would also like to add that you have in no way offended me. You have only offended yourself by making and argument for which you do not have the facts.
