This is one site I'd highly recommend if you're into Lord of the Rings and Tolkien.
The Encyclopedia of Arda.

This is what it says on the Nazgul:
A word from the Black Speech, usually translated 'Ringwraith'; the name of the nine Men corrupted by the power of Sauron's Nine Rings, and transformed into his dark and deathless servants.

And it includes lots of links to other entries.

Sauron is the dark lord, though he was originally just a servant of Melkor, Saruman is the wizard you're talking about.. :P

ok, no i didn't remember that word for word, I got my book out and looked it up for you (I did know what it was I was looking for though)

anyways

oh i see gecko posted while i was trying to...anyways, yes a halfling is a hobbit

i think its basically, everyone calls them halflings and tolkien gave them the nickname hobbit for his books....correct me if i'm wrong but i see halflings in loads of books and hobbits in only his.

Actually the Balrogs were Maia, like Sauron was.
So they were I think created by Illuvatar and Melkor well he uhm just had a bad influence on them!

The Encyclopedia of Arda entry on Balgors is immense!
There is a large section on the question whether or not Balrogs have wings..

In the movie the Balrog had wings, right ?

yeah, gecko - after Sonkem told me what they were called - I read up that whole section in encyclopedia on them.

In the movie - it was this huuuge demon with a tail, horns and 2 big wings, and a leash.

So what I dont understand now - in encyclopedia it said that they were man-like and came from the same roots as Gandalf!!! But but it was totally not manlike in the movie!!! Plus it said (in encycl.) at one point that it was as big as a house.

I think the wings are just like phantom wings...its not there for a purpose just for cool look.

i think in the movie they exagerate everything possible to make it look different from gandalf and very scary and dangerous....

although that was what i was expecting the balrog to look like...so i dont know.... but if it had real wings why did it fall from the bridge...it could have flown away right??

UHm as for that gift.. mm it's been a while since I read the books..

Ah okay, it was a phial!
I'm not sure what is mentioned when she gives him the phial, and what is not, so maybe it's best if I don't tell everything here?

We are trying to educate poor Mint, who is listening to LOR on CDs and not understanding much.

Here is another question - what happened to Gandalf when he became white? Did he die and come back to life? He said someone dressed him in white clothes - who? what? :???:

*looks at PPrincess signature about chicken bigger then Mint's -> *

Okay guys. Iluvatar Allmighty has decided to help you educate Mint and others on the subject of LOTR.

Sonkem is correct in saying that Gandalf and the Balrog have the same roots. Sauron, Gandalf, Saruman and the Balrogs are all Maia and were created by Iluvatar. Sauron was a servant of Melkor and corrupted other Maia like himself who then became the Balrogs. The Valar who live on the other side of the Great Ocean later sent the five Istari or five Wizards to help Middle Earth fight against Sauron. Saruman and Gandalf are among these five Wizards. Sauron, Saruman, Gandalf and the Balrogs all have the same origin (they are all Maia) but vary in power and appearance. Maia can sometimes change their appearance, hence the Balrogs and Sauron are big and ugly and Saruman and Gandalf adopted a human appearance. To further point out the fact that Gandalf and the Balrog are equals, you can note that on the bridge in Khazad-dum, Gandalf spoke of being a wielder of the flame of Anor as if he had just the weapon neccessary to defeat his adversary.

What happened to Gandalf when he became white?
Like I said, Gandalf was sent to Middle Earth by the Valar with a mission: defeat Sauron. The Valar have a certain power over death (Mandos for those who have read the Silmarillion). When Gandalf died he was sent back to Middle Earth to complete his task and was placed at the top of the Order of Wizards replacing Saruman and hence becoming Gandalf the White. As for the clothes, it was Galadriel who gave him his white robes but I think that's just to show his rank.

Sorry for the super long post but I was trying to be clear and specific :D :D

That was a great post.

Who Are Valar? R they like gods? How r valar related to Maia? Is Iluvatar also a Valar since he created Maia?

I have to read that book, it starts on S i know. It takes about history of Middle earth and such ....But since I haven't finished reading The hobbit and LOR - I have to wait before that one...
