New server news

Postby Paul » Monday 16 May 2005 9:30:11pm

Sorry I've not been around much lately. As many will know I've been getting things organised for a move to a brand new server. Setting things up has certainly taken very much longer than I'd expected,. I've been trying to ensure that the eventual move goes successfully so have been doing a whole lot of tests on a test server and on my home PC too before setting things up on the main new server itseff (hee hee - with all the tests, my home PC is now a fully working quadruple-boot system - yikes! Windows95, XP, and two different versions of Linux!)

All the testing was completed a couple of weeks ago and I'm right now in the middle of setting up the new server itself...or should I say herself....she's called Hoppy by the way :-) As I write this, Hoppy is busy tootling away, loading her new base operating system. I'm hoping that all the stuff necessary to get Hoppy happily serving web pages etc will be completely running perfectly in about 2 to 3 weeks time, at which point the forum will move to the new server herself. For the technically minded, Hoppy is pretty powerful, with a 2.8ghz CPU and 1Gb of RAM so I'm hoping that this, plus the way I'm setting things up should give a nice speed increase to the forum just ahead of Book 6 being released. :)

Awesome news

Thanks Paul. It will be great that the forum will operate faster. Will the layout look any different?

Hope it all goes well.

Thanks for the good wishes Nightcrawler. I was taken back a couple of days last week just by accidentally putting a full stop where a comma should be in one particular file...hoppy seems to be very particular about her punctuation! :-) Things are back on the correct track again now though and continuing to progress well.

The forum's layout won't immediately change, although it's interesting that you've asked, as I'd been thinking that it may be nice to possibly give the forum a fresh change of look at some time - probably nothing drastic (and I'm not sure exactly what changes to make yet) but maybe a few different uses of colour here and there possibly.

Will all of the posts and topics still be there? I mean, we won't have to start over or anything?

Don't worry all existing posts and topics will be transferred over to hoppy and the forum's address of www.broomsticksandowls.com/forum will stay exactly the same. The main immediate change that should occur is what Mint mentioned about hoppy hopefully being better behaved than Li'l monster. :-)

Li'l monster has done well but I've never had total control of her because she's a "Virtual Dedicated Server" which means that although I can treat Li'l monster as a dedicated server in many ways, Li'l monster is still actually shared between myself and a number of other people. Hoppy is a true dedicated server that only little me will be using for BaO and a small few other sites, so her processing abilities aren't shared with who-knows-how-many additional people's sites as well. :)

Welll....Things have ended up taking a lot longer than planned, so sincere apologies again everyone. After spending weeks setting up the new server, and getting things very close indeed to being fully operational and ready to transfer BaO over, I figured the wise thing was to do a whole backup of the new vitually-fully configured server about 4 weeks ago.

The first backup failed overnight....I thought maybe there could have been a connection problem or something between my PC and the server so I tried again the next night.....Another failure for some reason. Then on opening my email on 9th June, I found that the the server company, 1and1, had disconnected the server from the internet and had said in the email that there was an "exploit" because of a large amount of data transfer. The email said that I had to use a fax to get them to reconnect the server.  ....aaargh, the data tranfer was me trying to do a backup, not an exploit!

Faxes are one thing I really dislike. I haven't got a fax machine and refused to sign-up to another server company because of insistence on faxes to confirm the order...Finding somewhere to send a fax (a shop or library) means excessive site downtime caused by the hassle of getting to somewhere to send the fax anyway...plus passing personal info (including password info) to someone who I have no idea whether to trust or not.

Anyhow I immediately emailed 1and1 explaining that it wasn't an exploit, just me backing the server up....and explaining that I was very concerned about whether this would happen again when I do future backups. I explained I wasn't happy about their requirement of using faxes and gave them 24 hours to get things up and running, after which I advised if it wasn't reconnected I'd leave them. Still they insisted on the fax so, to save any future such problems and avoid downtime for BaO in the case of future silly action by 1and1, I decided that the long termm answer was to simply use a different server company.

Seeing as I've had to go over a lot of the setup stages again, all of this took things back by a few weeks....I'm now nearly up to the stage that I was at at the end of May (I've already done one successful large backup by the way without any such problems as I'd experienced with 1and1).

I'm still hoping to get everything set up and moved before The Half Blood Prince is released, so that there's any minor moving-to-new-server disruption after the release...it's going to be a very tight schedule (and I'm really not quite sure if I can get it done fast enough but you can be sure that I'm trying like crazy at the moment!) so many apologies if you've PM'd me or anything, and haven't received a reply yet. I'll try to reply as soon as I can once the server move is all over (and before if I possibly can, but can't honestly promise a reply before). Once the move is done, I should be able to be here more in general too.

Meanwhile I'd like to publicly say a huge and heartlfelt thanks to all the great Mods here who have been keeping things running brilliantly whilst I've been busy.

Although it's a different new server than originally intended, she's still called hoppy by the way. :-)

Thanks Dorkwad. The new server is fully set up now. I've just done a minor upgrade to the board tonight in preparation to transfer everything over, and I'm hoping to be able to move BaO over to hoppy in the next day or three. Tests are currently showing that hoppy is giving results at about 5 times the speed of li'l monster, although that's before everything is moved over, so I can't say that the speed increase will definitely be that much, but it's looking good. :-)

Okies everyone, this is it - the big move to hoppy, the new server, will commence at 1.15am British Summer Time on 13th July 2005. The forum will be temporarily closed during the move, but I've prepared most things already so hopefully you should be able to access the new server within a few hours. The main thing that will determine how long before you can access the new forum will be the move of the database...a pretty hefty creature! The last time BaO moved (to Li'l monster) the database move took many days, but this time it should only take an hour or two at most as I'll be using a different method of loading the database on hoppy. Before you can access the new server it will also depend on some more technical thingummies - how long it takes DNS changes to propagate through the internet. Basically to ensure that you can access the new server using the trusty www.broomsticksandowls.com/forum address, nameservers that your Internet service provider uses need to know that BaO now uses a different server at a new IP address. This usually is 24 to 48 hours but tests I've done with other sites and it's been almost immediate, within a few minutes, at least from my own PC. The amount of time before your own internet service provider updates its nameserver details may differ though.

Yeek, I've babbled on a bit but basically all it means is that after a slight delay of anything between a few minutes to 48 hours, you'll still be able to use the good old www.broomsticksandowls.com/forum address to get to BaO :-)

Looking forward to seeing you at hoppy!

Weeheee! Wow, that went better than I'd hoped to expect. The entire database took just 12 and a half minutes to transfer over and fully load onto hoppy, and it looks like everything is running smoothly.

A big welcome to hoppy!

Hi Dorkwad. I think you're the first member to reach hoppy! The changes must be starting to permeate through the internet already.

Yes, things definitely feel faster here too. There are a few more sites of mine that I'll be adding to hoppy over the next week or two so she's not quite under her final full load yet but she seems to be coping very well indeed with the forum's database.

Hee hee - yay to another multiple window person :) I've got 28 windows plus 18 Opera browser windows which contain a total of 111 tabs, and a Firefox browser window with another 10 tabs at the moment. :-)
