you know Phinea, you're right wondering that. the word Passion does make sense in greek though cause it means "Pathi" in greek and that means all the suffering of Jesus.

Athena I think that it wasn't Pilatus that told them to stop when Christ was only an inch from death just from the beating, but somebody else, that I can't remember.
And tiggirl is right. There are more things than just blood and suffering. There is emotion as well. All those flash-backs are really touching. And many other things...

yeah, the thing is, most people don't even know what the Passion of Christ is (well, at least before the movie came out)... passion today is used more in terms of soap opera relationships and trash novels, or like an artists absolute dedication to something... so, with the dedication thing, I guess that could loosely resemble the passion in the sense that we're talking about, but it's still not something most people "get"

hmmm... actually, sorry bout that, I don't know where I got that there were only 39 lashes... could have been, but I just looked it up in all four Gospels, and all it says is that Pilate tried to save him, sent him to Harod, Harod sent him back, and Pilate eventually turned him over to be flogged and crucified...

yeah, before pilate handed over Jesus to be crucified he "washed his hands before the crowd, saying 'I am innocent of this man's blood; see to it yourselves.'" that is from matthew 27.24
