Time in the book?

Postby Person1 » Wednesday 3 August 2005 2:10:18am

interesting, stumbled on this site Via google...

Anyways, so based on what seems to be the age of chars, Hagrid seems to be about the age of what Harry's parents should be, and Hagrid went to Hogwarts at the same time as Tom Riddle... so, anyone think anything of this?

I don't think that's right. Hagrid and Voldermort were in school together and he was working when Arthur and Molly Weasley were teenagers. If I'm right, they're quite a bit older than Harry's parents, so I would assume that Hagrid was around to take care of James Potter and Lily Evins. he was not their peer

Hagrid has got giant blood in him . So it would seem that he doesn't seem
to be old even if he is nearly 60 years old .

Hagrid was born somewhere around 6 December 1928. Around 1940 is his first year at hogwarts and about in 1943 he's expelled and takes the position as a gamekeeper. And James was born in about 1960. So it is clear Hagrid was the already working at Hogwarts when James Potter came to study there. (I've taken this info from the hp-lexicon)

Well one reason why I think that the dates have never been truly established was mainly due to the fact, that through this, the book may become ageless, and will be read in twenty years and still seem to be relevant.

Well considering he is a half a giant I don't think he's that old. :D Or at least that's how I picture giants. As living a very long time. :) And think that Lord Voldemort was in his 16 when he freed the snake for the first time. And that was 50 years ago. So LV himself is quite old.

Hagrid never striked me as being only 30-someodd years old. What's the link to that site? They might've gotten their timeline wrong.

Yep, good to see you're right there.
Hagrid isn't the same age as Harry's parents.

Though I'm quite interested to know what he did from the time he was expelled to when he became gamekeeper, because whatever you say, I don't think he could have managed it at third year.
Half-giant or not.

Do you think he could have put up with the slander from the students, taunting him about his new job.
I don't think we'll ever find out, but I still doubt DD would have given him that role straight away.

And a welcome to you, Albus Dumbledore!

You're right, I don't think he could've gotten a good job at third year. I wonder, do the people that like wipe tables in the Leaky Cauldron have degrees. Or do they have to like pass fifth year or somethng. Then again, he probably wouldn't get the job because being a half-giant he would scare away the customers.
