Harry Potter as the first book some kids have ever read

Postby Phinea Rogue » Sunday 3 April 2005 4:44:14pm

In one Slovak forum there is this big discussion about Harry Potter books. One person there claims that HP books taught children to read again while another person says that it's not true, those people and kids who read HP, didn't read any other books afterwards (when HP was their first book to be read). What do you think? Is there some truth that Rowling taught children to read again or do they read only Harry Potter and nothing more?

Probably, but I mean something different. Imagine that you're a kid who has never read anything and then came upon HP books and read them. Do you think that he/she reads only HP again and again or he/she would read other books too?

i dont think they taught the kids to read, because you would have no where to staart with a book that has such extensive details and difficult vocab. I think that they would read other books though, unless they truly despised reading, and just read HP b/c of all of the excitement...

yeah, i agree with DorkWad547?!. but, from what i know, most of the time the parents read the harry potter books to the kids, and then the kids just start trying to read them themselves...and its so exciting that they dont want to give any other books a try.

If I were such a kid, I would like to read similar books too rather than re-reading Harry Potter again. Once a kid understands how exciting reading can be, he/she should be willing to read other stories, too.
