Suggestions for June

Postby Broccoli » Thursday 27 April 2006 10:32:03am

As you may know, our first book of the month is the Hobbit and the discussions will start on May 1, moderated by Scellanis.

Now, as I will probably moderate the discussion in June, please let me know, what book you would like to propose.

"Mists of Avalon" has been suggested so far. Any other ideas?

Mists Of Avalon looks like it could be a very interesting tale and a nice Suggestion from Phinea. Just checked about the length though - yikes 912 pages according to Amazon. Think I'd need at least 2 months to read that one! Your suggestion about Inkheart looked like it would be a good read too, if also slightly longish at 544 pages. I'm going to need to learn to read faster (at 38 too - talk about teaching an old dog new tricks....woof!) . :)

Ooooh, I don't believe this, I've just found by searching the name of a Science Fiction book that I'd been thinking about. The Flight of the Dragonfly by Robert L. Forward. It's one I've been thinking of maybe suggesting for the future. I'd probably need to read through it again first to make sure it's suitable for all ages (I'm almost certain there's no problematic stuff though).

Erm, I think 'tis little me that will be presenting The Hobbit (although I may well be wrong). :-)

Reading slowly is my little problem, too! As for Inkheart, I am actually listening to the audio book although I do have the second part of it as a real book.

Oh and I just thought Scellanis would introduce The Hobbit because she had suggested the book.

I want to suggest Magic Kingdom For Sale/Sold by Terry Brooks.

Breifly its about an American buisness man who is all alone having lost his wife. He gets a catalogue at Christmas and finds an article, Magic Kingdom for sale. He takes a chance and buys it and it turns out to be real but there is a catch...

Terry Brooks sold the movie rites for it, I believe they are adding teenagers to follow him about in the movie. Don't know when its due to come out but its a very good series, a talking dog, a hopeless wizard, a paladin, a witch...there is a black unicorn and dragon and all sorts in later books.

And the best bit is that you should be able to get it from amazon for pennies.

Can't go wrong with a talking dog...woof! (sorry, couldn' resist a second bark in the same thread!) Hey, Scellanis, is it you or me presenting the Hobbit. I'm all confuffled.

Good idea about using audio books by the way.

*squeaks*

I don't know what to do with it, I haven't had time to even find my book...which is alright for I know the story pretty much off by heart anyways but it would have been nice to reread it...

That's OK - I was thinking it was me anyway so I'm all ready to present it. The July book can be yours if you like after Broccoli's selection for June's discusions.

Any ideas what your final choice will be Broccoli?

Can I give another suggestion for a book? What about the "Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy"? It's much shorter than "Mists of Avalon", probably many people have already read it and it's a really funny little book. :D

Hitchhikers is a trilology of 5 books....I've got it, it's huge and I still haven't finished the first book, I've been reading it since last summer...

Thank you all for the interesting suggestions! I am curious to read the books you mentioned, but as I haven't yet and there is not so much time left till June I'll go with Inkheart by Cornelia Funke:

Well, the first book would it enough, it's really short (besides, the last two books aren't as good as the first three ones) and that's the best one.

Have just ordered it from amazon...just hope it arrives in time for me to read...

Should we open suggestions for the july book of the month yet? It might be good to get it decided before we start june so people have over a month to get and read them....because you know if you have to order from amazon sometimes they don't arrive immediately if like me you add things to make the delivery free and then they have long dispatch estimates...

Yes, it's probably a good idea to start thinking about a book for July...maybe with the aim of finalising a decision around (or possibly even slightly before) the middle of this month. If anyone has any more ideas, now is the time to put them forward. :-)

July's final decision and presentation will be yours Scellanis if it's OK with you. :)
