Dolores Umbridge

Who do you like best and who could you definately live without? Will there be romance in the air for any of them and who will end up with who?

Arrrrrrrrrrrrrgh! Here was a character I loved to hate! :x

I can't tell you how many times I was angry with her (and the Ministry of Magic and Fudge and Percy) all throughout the book! She was cruel, mean, unfair, and unnerving in many parts of the book. What did you lot think of her? :???:

Remember how her punishment for Harry was for him to write, in his own blood, "I will not tell lies"? Or how she banned him for life from Quidditch? Or how she helped to get rid of Dumbledore and gave all the professors grief? The list is a mile long!

Methinks I shouldn't be the only one who feels strongly about this character . . . what are your thoughts? :???:

Is that discipline legal??? I find it hard to believe that almost nobody noticed when Harry kept showing up with the red, bloody, scar-ed hand. After all, when it happened to Lee Johnson once, Harry noticed. Then again, maybe he knew what to look for.

I'm really surprised Umbridge got away with half she did, including that punishment...I swear, had she not worked for the Ministry, I'd have sworn *she* was a Death Eater! She was so tight with all the Slytherins (probably because they're as prejudiced and as ignorant as she is), and the things she did to students and professors alike was appalling.

However, she was a great catalyst for things as well as representing just how out of control the Ministry got...just how well Voldemort had successfully divided people and had them working against each other. In fact, Voldemort, himself, played such a minor role in things...if anything, the Ministry did his 'evil work' for him...they seemed more like the enemy than he did, yet he inspired a good deal of the evil.

Like I said, a character I loved to hate...I truly enjoyed when she got repaid for her nastiness, and she had the ability to make you feel sorry for characters I certainly never really felt sorry for before (i.e. Trelawney). I wonder what will happen with her and with Fudge in the next book... :???:

Ugh, she was such a hateful character that she was far beyond the love-to-hate category. You can love to hate Snape, or love to hate Draco, but Dolores is truly in a class by herself.

She was just one of those horribly frustrating character that make you want to punch everything and everything. She was a good character (as far as nastily horrid characters go ) and was a definite necesity for the book, I truly hope that she doesn't show up again. Mainly for my own sanity and the appearance of the walls in my house. ;)

Perhaps I phrased that wrong.

I 'love to hate' Snape in that he can just be so nasty at times, but deep down I feel a little sorry for him and see his is human in his own ways, the same with Draco (though, I'm not sure I can say the same about Lucius).

So, I was mistaken in saying I 'loved to hate' Umbridge. That would indicate I loved any of my feelings about her, which I most certainly did not. Definitely a necessary catalyst and character, but I kept hoping horrible things would happen to her. She was just that horrid...not to mention, creepy. I'm sorry, but I'm not a child, and the punishment she gave Harry using his own blood was just bizarre. I take it back, 'horrid' is one thing, out-and-out 'evil' is quite another...are we sure she isn't a minion of Voldy's (I know she probably isn't, but she sure could have been!)? She sure made *his* reign of terror much simpler!

When bad things happen to bad people...

You have to admit, the worse she treated the teachers and the students, the worse you wanted to see her get exactly what she deserved. So it was amusing to see the school go into full revolt.

Of course, the dramatic departure of George and Fred was a highlight of the book. Once they fully rejected Hogwarts and it's rules, the field was wide open for them to pull out all the stops, not only with the portable swamp, but with their final words to the student assembly. Talk about defying authority!

This is the first character in the whole Harry Potter series I really hate.

I mean, Snape and Draco can be really nasty, even Lucius can be annoying, but you read them, and say well I do not like this guy, but up to there; but the way Umbridge is, she isn't even funny (which surely Draco and Sanpe can be), or even good sarcasm or attitude (which I like about Lucius), you just want her to die in the worst way ever, and the Educational Decrees she kept bringing were really exasperating. What I hate must, is that she makes a hard time for everyone, but working for someelse not even for what she thinks, I mean she worked for Fudge, and only cared for what Fudge said, any other thing was wrong (she didn't seem to have a mind of herself, but then she said she sent the dementors (which make me think that she really can think be herself) but then it hit it me, she really works Voldemort, and know I hate her even more.

I feel much better know.

The biggest reason that I despised her character was because she didn't have any emotional side to deal with. We can almost like Snape because we know how unliked he is, and that there must have been something awful that had happened to him when he was younger. However, With D. Umbridge, she was just so cruel and un-human like, there was no way I could relate to her. Also, the fact that she had so much power was scary. Fudge was wraped around her fat pinky, and there was no way to stop her.

I'm re-reading book 5 right now (so it's a little easier, as I'm a bit smug since I know what ultimately happens to Ms. Dolores), and I'm finding her laughable at times...I mean, really, she's a power-crazed/hungry secretary who completely over-estimates her value, worth, purpose, and importance to anyone! I *loved* when Professor McGonagall took her down to size every single time! Shoot, if any character can make me feel sorry for Trelawney, you know they're bad!

Now, that's not to say I still didn't get creeped out by her detentions :o ...surely that constitutes as child abuse of some sort...no teacher, magical or not, should be allowed to get away with that! And then there's the business of her ordering the dementors (which she had to know they'd try to 'kiss' Harry and Dudley! ) to get Harry...that's worse than had sent someone to kill them...had the dementors succeeded, Harry and Dudley would have suffered a fate worse than death! :o

The insane part is that Fudge and Umbridge and all them made this huge to-do about Harry flagrantly using powerful magic in front of a muggle, but she (Umbridge) nearly had the soul sucked out of a muggle AND an innocent wizard besides! Granted, we didn't know that at that part, and the Ministry was all about doing whatever the he** it felt like...the ends justifiying the means or some such nonsense like that! Did Umbridge ever suffer any disciplinary action at the end of book 5?? :???:

Just as a warning, as I re-read book 5 some more, you'll probably see more posts of this nature about Umbridge and probably Fudge! Consider yourselves warned  ...and feel free to join in!

Remember the what Mr. Filch has said?

Postby squeaks » Thursday 17 July 2003 6:02:48pm

He has mentioned many times that students used to get hung upside down, and wipped. So, while I do not care for her punishments, and agree that they are very cruel, it seems it could be worse.

There is no love/hate thing going on with Umbridge. With me its just hate. This lady had no redeeming qualities and the only time I enjoyed reading a scene with her in it was when Proff. McG was telling her off.

My friend makes like and dislike lists for every book and it was funny because Umbridge had a list all to herself. It was like:

1) Hem, Hem
2) Child abusing pen
3) Her evil smile

And it goes on and on.

actually....... it might be pretty fun to see her in the next book, so that harry and whoever else she made life miserable for (which was pretty much everyone) to rub it in her face how she was such a bad headmistress and how she was taken away by the centaurs. i think it would be funny to see her back and put in her place.
