here's my theory. what if grindelwald knew that dumbledore was in love with him, and grindelwald used that info to his advantage by manipulating dumbledore into helping with the whole for the greater good thing?

He very well could have. He was an extremely power hungry individual who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted. Dumbledore, maybe experiencing love/attraction for the first time could habe just gotten a little sprung and let the situation as he said go on to far. He neglected his brother and sister for him, and his maglomaniatic ideas became a great influence on him for a time.
