Luna Lovegood...

Who do you like best and who could you definately live without? Will there be romance in the air for any of them and who will end up with who?

Mmh, Luna is certainly fascinating, and to have her end up with another student seems too common, not weird enough. Or, perhaps, with the Giant Squid, the Bloody Baron or similar character ? Seriously, her name is certainly well picked for the moony part, but the love one has yet to appear, no ?

I feel that Luna LoveGood is not a love interest for Harry, atleast in the long run...meaning she is not the girl he'll end up with forever. However, I also feel she is important because of The Quibbler. Could her connections to The Quibbler be the birth of some anti-death eater, pro-order of the phoenix propaganda paper? I mean in WWII, propaganda was one of the major tools of the Nazis, the Allies, and the under ground resistance. With the Daily Prophet going to the hogs, I feel The Quibbler could now be used for a resistance propaganda...thus making Luna's appearance and reference to her father's position worth while...look how publishing Harry's interview went over...it informed the public and infuriated the enemy!

Does anyone else find it odd that Luna escaped the department of mysteries without being hurt at all while someone like Hermione got wasted? Also what was the experiment that Luna's mother was working on when she died? Maybe Luna is finishing or has finished this experiment/research. I think this could be very important in future books.

Her mum could very well have been working in the DoM. Perhaps even in the death chamber. Did her mum die while working? I can't remember clearly, I should really reread the book. Maybe her mum found out certain things, told them to Luna and that's why she could hear the voices too?

I just commented on this in another topic, Luna and Harry are the only people physically unscathed and Harry had the prophecy as protection!

From what I remember there were four who heard voices:

Harry
Luna
Neville
Ginny

Though I can't see a common thread, unless it's that Ginny saw Tom Riddle killed? I've not re-read CoS for a while so I can't comment but if so then only those who've seen death can hear the voices.

Unless Ginny saw death when she killed the roosters for Tom??

When reading about Luna, I am reminded of a character in Larry Niven's Ringworld books. Teela Brown, the enigmatic woman bred for luck could not be harmed or injured. She had the "luck" genes.

No matter how dire the situation, she always came thru it unharmed. That sounds like Luna.

Er-, I seem to recall that Luna is moaning, lying on the floor, when Harry runs after Bella. So much for the lucky breeding

Thestrals

Postby highsorcerer » Wednesday 16 July 2003 9:54:12am

Uh, I don't think roosters qualify for death sightings for thestrals. Hasn't everybody swatted a fly or stepped on an ant? Besides, she was possessed by Tom Riddle, Jr. at the time. She clearly states in OotP that her memories during the time she was possessed were blank, and she couldn't see the thestrals when they were boarding them for the flight to London.

So any other theories why those four were drawn to the veil??

Theories

Postby highsorcerer » Wednesday 16 July 2003 12:17:34pm

My only theory that would account for those four, and exclude Hermoine and Ron is pretty weak. I've considered several.

Harry, Luna, and Neville have all seen somebody die, but Ginny hasn't. If she had, she'd have seen the thestrals.

Harry and Ginny have both had near-death experiences. We don't know about Neville or Luna.

Harry and Ginny both have had direct contact with the dark arts. Luna and Neville are not known to have, though Neville has an indirect link via his parents.

The really only known link between those four (which would exclude Ron and Hermoine) is that they've all had suffering in their lives. Harry's experiences would fill a book (actually, five of them so far). Neville has suffered due to the terrible plight of his parents. Ginny suffered from being possessed by Tom Riddle, Jr. (Voldemort). Luna suffered from seeing her mother die in front of her at a young age. In contrast, neither Hermoine or Ron has had any kind of major suffering in their lives. While they've shared adventures with Harry, they've never been around at the end when it came to a real showdown. Harry faced Quirrell alone, Tom Riddle, Jr. and the basilisk alone, drove off the dementors alone, and witnessed (and participated in, unwillingly) Voldemort's return alone.

There is one other oddball possibility, and that is the four of them (Harry, Luna, Ginny, and Neville) all have some seer ability. Hermoine was never good at divination, and neither was Ron. We don't know about Luna, Ginny, or Neville, but Harry, despite his disdain for the subject, actually should have gotten good marks on his third year final exam. While Trewlany dismissed his vision, his prediction (seeing Buckbeak flying away) actually came true.

2 questions:

1) Does Luna have any brothers or sisters? Is she Ron/Ginny's cousin?

2) The HP Lexicon says that the Lovegoods also live in Ottery St Catchpole - where's this in the books? (I don't think it was OOTP)

As for question number 2, it's mentioned in GoF, when they are at the portkey. Mr Diggory I think it is, says some things about the wizarding families that live in their neighbourhood, and he says that the Lovegoods have already gone to the Quidditch thingie. Hope to have helped you : ) !
