Ah, Eol, you touched one of the greatest questions...
Nowhere in the books is clearirly written which House they belonged to, anyway we can make some suppositions:
1) Probably they were in the same House, because they were friends, but this is not a proof. A proof may be tha fact that Lupin says in Book 5 that DD chose him as a prefect instead of James or Sirius
2) Harry probably attends his father's House (as Ron is in his parents' and brothers' and Draco in his father's)
3) Phineas Nigellus speaking of the Black family, in Book 5, says "We Slytherin"... So was Sirius in Slytherin... ???

My personal opinion is that they all were in Gryffondor

Albus, your second supposition is a little questionable. Don't forget that if Harry is sorted to his father's house automatically, the Sorting Hat had first chose Slytherin for Harry. Harry chose Gryffindor.

Secondly, I don't think family is a strong criteria for the Sorting Hat. Padil and Padma are sisters and in different houses.

Yeah, that would apply to Slytherin as they are pure blood - so you would expect families to be generally in Slytherin.

I too find Lily & James' generation fascinating and I reeeaaallllly hope for more stuff about them in the next few books. I just love reading about Sirius, Remus and James.
Snape is of course fascinating and I personally think that the pensieve scene was just like we saw it. I think that if he had unconsciously (or consciously!) remembered Sirius & James as being nastier than they were, he might have remembered himself as being more innocent. Of course he was being unfairly picked on, but when Lily tried to defend him he called her a filthy mudblood (which we must remember is a 'really foul' name for someone who's muggle-born - not just a throwaway insult like 'cow' or 'git' or whatever) which shows that he was still a pretty nasty piece of work! Maybe that's silly, but I think the pensieve scene was just like it was...probably very very wrong though!

I think it was very clear Sirius rejected his family and everything it stood for. He grew up in a Slytherin house, but hated it. He ran away from home because he couldn't take it anymore. Harry's grandparents accepted him. Sirius's brother became a death eater.

It is our choices that make us who we are...sometimes families are similar, and then they have similar behaviors and traits that help them get into the same house...sometimes they are different...look at Padma and Parvati Patil, they are even twins who aren't in the same house...family means nothing to the sorting hat, I think...it might help, but yet in the end its our choices that make us into who we really are...

Who knows, maybe James had the Sorting Hat suggest Slytherin to him too...

Maybe in the case of twins the sorting hat sorted them into two houses in order to bring out their individual personalities. I imagine it must be hard for twins to "find themselves" if they are always together. And as Gryffindor and Ravenclaw never seen to have classes together maybe that's why.

Well, I've heard a theoree which I reckon works rather well, which is that the four 'marauders' are in each of the four houses, viz:
James - Gryffindor
Sirius - Slytherin
Remus - Ravenclaw
Peter - Hufflepuff

Now, people are going to object to this because they've got into the habit of viewing the houses morally, in particular to expecting Hufflepuff to be a 'good' house and Slytherin to be an 'evil' house. In fact, as is clear from the Hat's song in OotP, this kind of division and stereotyping is what weakens the wizarding world. (Actually, I have a little theoree myself about the Houses & psychological type.)

The marauders at their best represent an ideal unity of the four houses which needs to be regained.

I really like this theory Mumbleberry. My point all along has been that everyone is assuming that the Marauders are all in Gryffindor, when there is no evidence of that. I think that JKR has created this Gryffindor is good Slytherin is bad generality intentionally only so she can pull the plug on it and shock us in book 6 or 7.

Oh, al have their bad points. But would the Maurders be in Slytherin just for James and Sirus' "height of cool" taunting and bulling? Or not?

Would Neville not be in Hufflepuff because he lacked bravery or talent at the time or his sorting?

What about Hermoine? She's smart enought to be in Raveclaw, bit like Harry rejected it.

And the Weasley Twins? Going into business for themselves? Want to know the truth about? It is terrifying. Because I know. I've rented a shop for my booksop and have no gauranteees. It's wise I'm not a Gryffidnor; I'm wise but not brave.
