Snape and Harry

Is it possible that Snape is Harry's cousin?

Supposedly we will learn something important about Lily...could it be that her mothers maiden name was Snape?..and that is why she felt sorry for Snape and one of the reasons James hated him so badly and why he dislike Harry but at the same time seems to feel some sort of responsibility (apart from James having saved his life) for him?..and why Dumbledore seemed to be trying to throw them together all the time?

JKR did say that if Harry had had *any* living relatives in the wizarding world, he would not have to grow up with the Dursley's....but we know harry has wizarding family...since all the purebloods are related (remember Sirius told this when discussing the tapestry) and since James was a pureblood Harry would have been related to all the purebloods on that side...cousins, etc...

so I took the comment to mean 1st degree relationships...grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings...but that his his aunt Petunia was the only 1st degree relative...so even if Snape was a 2nd cousin he still would have had to go to his mothers sister, unless his father had a living sibling or any of his grandparents were alive.

I understand what you're saying, and it makes sense. But if you say that, wouldn't you also have to broaden the range and say that every wizard who had wizarding blood in his family was related to all therwizards? I though all families stemmed from the purebloods when they started dying out and had to intermarry with Muggles?

that could become a very complicated family tree... if you go that far then he would also likely be ron's cousin (or some such relation) as well as sirius', dumbledore's, and (gasp) malfoy's. he'd be related to everybody.

In TOoTP Sirius explained that all the pureblood families were related....it becomes a question of how closely related each one is to each other..and whether they intermarried only w/other purebloods or if they married muggles (magical or not)

It's a very confusing route to go down i dont think it is true cos Black knew everyone he was related to and i'm sure that Harry's Dad would've found out if he was related to Snape

Pure-bloods didn't always marry pure-bloods. Sirius's mother burned people off the tapestry, disowned them, for marrying outside of the pure-blood regime. Sirius said that his cousin Andromeda was disowned for marrying a Muggle-born. They don't all intermarry, but it is clear that most try.

It is hinted from the memories in the pensieve that there was intermarrying going on with the Gaunt family, LV's mother's family. It was hinted that that was why Morfin and Merope looked so deformed, inbreeding.

Yes, Lily's maiden name was Evans. That means that her father's surname was Evans. What the original post is suggesting is that perhaps Lily's mother's maiden name was Snape.

I very much doubt it.

Most people just have a lot of time on their hands, sometimes I formulate the oddest theories, odder than this, like that Harry is really an alien come to Earth and has imprisoned the real Harry, and DD hasn't been sober san 700 B.C., but I always shove them aside (even the mildly serious ones) some people just hang on to them.
