JKR/WB vs. RDR/Steve Vander Ark

Postby DucksRMagical » Wednesday 16 April 2008 9:15:53pm

Well, Jo is in court this week against the HP Lexicon guy, Steve Vander Ark. He wants to publish an HP encyclopedia and Jo and Warner Bros. are saying it's a copyright infringement. I'm with Jo on this one. Vander Ark is taking her work and trying to publish it and make money off of it. His website is nice, I like it, but this is crazy. He shouldn't be able to make money off Jo's work.

Here's a link to all the articles.

Thats complicated...I mean obviously its a copyright infringement and hes daft for even trying but at the same time it would be an absolutely awesome book to own.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if they could come to some sort of arrangement where JK gets to publish it but he gets a share for doing the work to write it for her...doubt it'll happen though.

She was planning on making an encyclopedia eventually, wasn't she? So it's conflicting with her future plans. I'm sure the fans will be thrilled to get it earlier. She should work with this guy and make sure everything is what she thinks it should be (because it is her creation!)

Also, there can be several volumes! The next could give even more information as she thinks of it. But don't deprive us, JK! You've already stopped writing and forced us all to channel our energies into Fan Fiction and Role playing to speculate what might have been, what could have been and what could still come.

As a last note, the guy should not get to publish it without JK's permission, but she should come to some kind of an arrangement! That would be wonderful.

She is planning on writing her own encyclopedia, which will include new info as well! :double jump: Vander Ark's encyclopedia is just a compilation of what's already been stated in the books and interviews. No new info or any of his own commentary. The whole thing is just Jo's work. So, I don't think he should get to make any money off of her work.

I'd rather just wait for Jo's encyclopedia because it will have all the new information. I'd wait as long as was necessary for the Scottish Book. :)

Ok... if that's the case, he shouldn't get any money from it. It's like when I made a play about HP.... we put it on, but it was for a school so we didn't make any money off it. It was all for the sake of the art.....

My friend made me a book once that was like an encyclopedia... i'm wondering if ppl wanted to, could they ask him to make them one so they could have that info? I would love a fully compiled one just because, and still buy the one JK does too....... hmmm... I expect he will be crushed like an insect on this one...
