Book Banning: Harry Potter

In fact I know a girl, who's parents are banning the book from their household. She told me, that they believe that the book is a clear representation of witchcraft and devil worship. Of course, they have done this, more or less because a religious leader in the community told them to do so. They did not do it, because they had read it themselves.

Banning books, just seems to be such a stupid choice. After all, who's banned books in the past? Hitler, Stalin and other dictators.

I can see the point of the people who say that HP is about witchcraft and witchcraft is evil, but even for someone who thinks like that, banning a book, especially a book like HP, should be a stupid idea.

I just hope the church won't start burning books as in the Middle Ages!

Well either way you look at it...publicity, negative or positive is publicity. The fact that the Vatican jumped all over the DaVinci code, just got more people to buy it.

Either out of spite or to see what the commotion is about.

Its like Hermione said, the best thing you can do is ban something and then everyone is sure to read it.

Which is why I don't think J.K.R. would or should care that much about it. !

If people don't realise it's fiction, then it's their loss.

The pope also whines about the trio lying all the time. Like HE never lied. I mean, we're all immature, so we all lie. I'm sure the pope has lied on occasion, if only in his far past. I think it's really bad that the Vatican has so much power over the world, I mean pope's acting like Hitler or Stalin, it's just that he doesn't have the power to completly ban the books.

I wouldn't go so far as to say he's acting like Hitler or Stalin.

He is the Pope, it's sort of a prerequisite that he doesn't exactly love fantasy novels.

To be honest, I couldn't care less the Pope bans them or not.
I couldn't care less whether anyone bans them.

It's their choice. What I disagree with is people banning them from other people (which they're doing) that don't think they have a choice in the matter. I don't agree with people that force their opinions on other people, and tell everybody else that they're right, and everybody else is wrong.

Oh, and come to think of it, do you think that that may have been a little jibe? Having Hermione say that banning something is a sure way to make peope read it?

I know, could've been angled at the pope, I wonder if he knows, he probably reads the books, just to find things he can use to jab it with. But wasn't the fifth book written before the whole pope-thing?

The controversy started as soon as the books got popular enough for them to care.

In this case, the movies probably helped.

Hmm..... that is where most of the money is made. I mean, selling books is only a small portion of J.K.R's money, the movies, toys, and videogames make up much more.

And with every new book that is added to her list she steadily brings in more. Like a snowball effect.

Well yeah, the book is the skeleton. But the real money is in the useless stuff.

Funny that... It's aimed at children though, so you can't expect anything different.

What do you think has raised the most money?

Toys probably, the cheap stuff (little $10 items) usually that makes the most. Even if it's aimed at adults. I personally only have the books and the DvD's, but my little ccousin has none of the books, but about $200 worth in toys.
