A Little Bit of Prose

Postby Alice I » Saturday 3 April 2004 7:07:23am

*Getting into the Way Back machine* I thought I might post some stuff I did in highschool.
Unfortunately for the life of me I can't find any of it.
There was only one piece that I ever did that got published (High School Magazine)
It was called The Dancer.
I wrote this thing some 25 years ago and all I could remember was the first line and the last line.
I re-wrote it tonight with the same general idea of the origional.
If I ever do find the origional I'll have to post it to see how much it changed in 25 years

The Dancer

The stage was set, the time was soon to come.
As he walked down the aisle of the empty theater a quiet excitement hung about the place that was almost palpable setting his nerves to buzzing.

When he reached the front of the theater he stood for a moment facing the raised stage and placed his hands on the smooth polished wooden floor. It was warm and inviting, for the high windows of the theater allowed the bright afternoon sun to stream down in majestic beams casting some parts of the stage in shadow while brightly illuminating long narrow sections filling the wood floor with it's warmth.

He made his way to the steps lading up to the stage on the left and felt an excitement begin to tingle deep inside of him as he climbed the steps.

He set his CD player on the floor and pushed the play button then slowly paced the distance to the center of the stage. He raised his head and smiled when he felt the warmth of one of those beams of light shining on his face the way the spot light does.

The music started slowly, almost mournfully as he gracefully arched his body in response. As the music filled the theater it also filled him down to his bones. As the tempo grew faster it spurred his body into perfectly synchronized movement. He could feel the music flowing through him like water flows through a stream bed. It lifted him through the air making him feel like a swan in flight then landing like a cat silently and gracefully.

The dance led him to an alternate reality that he cherished above all else, for when the music flowed through him and the dance made him fly he was finally and truly happy.

As the music faded and the dance ended he came to rest panting and feeling a strange mix of emotions that he always felt at the end of a dance. Content and happy, yet empty and longing. The music was gone now, the dance was finished...

…until next time.

He collected his CD player and made his way down the steps to the stage; the only sound he could hear was the light tapping of the long metal rod that guided him.

Thanks Meg,
I hope that I can one day find the origional. but probably the only way to do that is to see if the alumni association ever kept copies of the school magazine.
