What does Lucious do for a living?

Postby Imelyen » Tuesday 22 March 2005 7:40:34pm

Hey guys,

Was mentioned in any of the books why Lucious has so much money? Just did a quick skim (well, as quick as it could be with these books) and couldn't find a darn thing..maybe I just missed it.

It was never mentioned. He was a school goveneur once, and he likes to hang out at the ministry, but he doesn't appear to have an actual job. I assume he's inherited most of his wealth.

I was always under the impression that he had a high position in the ministary. Perhaps I was wrong? I guess we'll get more information about him in books 6 and 7. Miss Siana, do you remember which book it was that it was mentioned about him being a school govener?

I got the distinct impression he didn't have a job in the ministry but likes to hang out there and bribe Fudge anyway.

Perhaps it is old money, perhaps Voldemort pays him, wasn't his muggle father rather rich? Maybe its money gotten from activities as a death eater or dark wizard.

I should imagine there is an awful lot more places a wizard can work than gringotts, the hospital, the ministry or the few shops we have seen but its just never been important to say any of them.

As for school govenor...I don't beleive thats a paid job, I think its probably like the parent teachers thing they do where parents volunteer to be on the committee thing to act as a voice for all the other parents in how the school is run and stuff.

yeah i don't think govenors get paid- anyway wasn't he asked to leave as school govenor?

Na, i think Lucius is a 'man of leisure', and makes his money through trading items assiociated with the Dark Arts

Well it's said that he donates hundreds of galleons to St. Mungo's and heaps of other charities, thus gaining the friendship of Fudge. School govenor may well be a position at the Ministry, has anyone thought of that? Working as a sort of correspondence between the school and the Ministry. Once he was outed out of that job, it's very likely that Fudge offered him a job. Whatever that was, he sure ain't in it now anyway.

He was a school goveneur in book two. He threatened to do something horrible to the other goveneurs' families if they didn't sign the paper that removed Dumbledore from his position as headmaster. But in the end, the whole story came out and Lucius himself had to resign.

I believe it's old money. Fudge said the Malfoys were a very old family in the context of their generous donations.

He seems like he could be a lawyer, or was at some point. I just can't see any other profession that would fit his "gifts". Something powerful, but not too much so.

Yeah that's right, they don't really have lawyers I think, though maybe they do. In OoTP Dumbledore backed Harry up and sort of acted like his lawyer in his case. Hmm anyone else got anything?
