Interesting discovery

I just stumbled across something:

Did you know what, according to mythology, the only animals are that can defeat a basilisk?
A Griffin and a weasle.

In christian mythology, a basilisk symbolises the devil whereas the griffin stands for christ. Mrs Rowling truly chooses her names carefully.

Well, she once said that she's obsessed with names. she searches and searches until she finds the right name for people or things because otherwise, her writing wouldn't feel right to her.

Yeah well JK is a smart woman, no doubt she probably already knew that the Basilisk symbolised the devil (etc.), so when it came to picking a monster for CoS, she already knew what she was doing.
It's very interesting though. She does that a lot..

Hmm yeah, but just coz it can't stand it doesn't mean that it can kill it. Somehow I can't picture a rooster killing a vicious serpent. Just me?

Wasn't it in the book, that the giant snake can only be killed by the yell of the rooster?

i was just reading CoS, and it says that "the cry of the rooster is fatal to it(basilisk), so ur right. the magic world is very strange... big laser-eyed maneating snakes getting killed by a flightless and delicious domesticated bird.

I don't know the theory behind this, but such a thing occurs frequently: Didn't Superman lose all his powers ih the presence of a simple substance? Seems to be monster's/hero's fate...

Yep, the book said it fears the cry of a rooster, that's why poor Ginny had to kill all of Hagrid's roosters. But as far as I know, that's JKR's invention, mythology mostly tells something else.


Hagger, maybe you're on the right track? I bet the Hogwarts motto 'Never tickle a sleeping dragon' is a clue!
