pure-blood families

Postby Mistress Siana » Thursday 20 November 2003 4:15:25pm

I have a question...when is a family considered pure? TOotP doesn't explain that. I far as I can see, there are 3 possibilities:

When everyone that carries the family name is a pure blood. As Narcissa is seen as a part of the Malfoy family and not one of the Blacks, this could also go for Tonks.

When there is at least one member of the family that is of pure blood. (least likely, I think)

Or when at least one member of the youngest generation is a pure blood, so he there is at least one unbroken line of pure-bloods.

Or did I miss anything?

Very very interesting question Siana!!!

Hmm I never thought of that... Well, its definitely not second possibility....so. Well.... for some reason I think that it has to be the first one. As far as I understand it there are not too many "pure bloods" left. So I think that it may be due to them being too selective.

However Im thinking right now....what if Lucius had a sister and one day she would just go and marry a muggle....I dont think that would automatically make Lucius non-pure...

I think it has to do with that persons mother/father/grandma/grandpa/ and so- on. Then THAT person (and not necessarely his cousins) is gonna be considered pure blood.

So uh yeah - Im going with 3rd explanation.

i believe that the definition of a pureblooded wizard means that the wizard has no Muggle blood in any one of their ancestors.

Sure, but when is a whole family, not a single wizard, considered pure?

.....yeah...i guess so.

What if Draco will mary a muggle (i know he wont but what if he would) - would that make Lucius and Draco Non-Pure? I dont think so.

Draco and Lucius as individuums would remain pure, but I think the Malfoy family as a whole wouldn't.

Good question. You´re right there, if someone of a pure blood family would marry a muggle and had children with them - then there´s Muggle blood in the family. So maybe the family wouldn´t be considered pure blood, but the members were still pure bloods? Like, if Draco married Hermione (teeheee    ), and they had kids, the kids wouldn´t be pure bloods but Draco, Lucius and Co would still be! :???:

You have it for the most part I think, Won. I think that from the point when a pure blood marries a muggle or half blood, they remain pure blood(as does the remainder of the family) but if there are no other members of the family in that generation, then from that point on the family would not be pure blood. If, however, to use your example, Won, if Draco had a brother who married a pure blood, then their family would continue to be an entirely pure blood family-- because Draco would still be pure, yet his descendents would be half blood.

I think that is the question: does every single member have to be pure in order to make a family considered pure, or does there only have to be one unbroken line of blood?

U know i just thought of smth....with exception for Weasleys pure bloods hate muggles. WHich means if they have kids like Sirius - they do what Siriuses family did - disown him!

Thus the family would still remain pure since they refused to admit that the child is theirs. ANd Im sure other pure bloods would support them in teh decision. THat is I think how they kept being pure bloods.

And now: What if Hermione married Dean? They are not pure bloods, nor would their children be. But then, it their children married some pure-blood; would Hermione grandchildren be pureblood?

Another problem is that Hermione grandchildren could marrie a not pure-blood wizard or witch, this repeating after several generations. Would these new wizards be pure blood, even though none of their ancestors were?

I mean, imagine you create your family tree and discover that everyone in the past three or four generations were wizards. Would you consider yourself a pure blood wizard?

Nope. They would no longer be pure blood. Only if your parents and grandparents and so on are pure - then u qualify as a pure blood.

Yeah... That's wha I mean... See... Who came fisrt, wizards or muggles? If muggles came first, so nobody is pureblood: there will be some muggle early in your family tree!!!
