Well, I mean, look at how Narcissa was like when she heard about Draco being appointed by LV. She was getting all worried and stuff. She seems like she isn't as strong as one may make her out to be.

Yeah I agree. Someone mentioned in one of the threads..how come Narcissa escaped being made a DE.. Anyone got any ideas??? I think this is a really good point.

Has she actually performed magic in the books? Perhaps she's not very good at it (although I don't think that she could actually be a squib).

Also she may not be willing to perform the killing curse on others?

Good point...How come she never joined...I always thouth it was more like: "Join or die"... Didn't LV kill those who refused to serve him?

Maybe LV was sexist. I wouldn't put it past him. Perhaps Lestrange did something big to prove her loyalty.

Perhaps the key is love and that LV doesn't allow people who can love to become DE's.

For all her faults, Narcissa clearly loves Draco, whereas Bellatrix seems not to care for anyone except the power of her master.

Yes, but LV doesn't know about the whole love-magic thing.

Unlikely.
I think he would have definitely would have tried his very best to work out why Harry didn't die.
He knows.

I'm not actually saying that. I meant that Voldemort doesn't trust people who can love as he sees it as a weakness and is repelled by it.

Hmm some interesting stuff here. Narcissa has performed magic in the books - HBP when she is arguing with Bella about going to Snape's and she apparated to get there and she made the unbreakable vow. I can't believe you would be able to make the vow unless you are a witch or wizard.

I like the idea of it being a love thing that's prevented her from joining or maybe LV never even asked?

More likely, evil though he is, I think Lucius would have stood in the way of Narcissa becoming a Death Eater. "It's a dangerous life and I love you" etc.. Addmittedly, he was probably only doing it for his own reasons, but that's not the point.
Then again, maybe Narcissa is as good as a Death Eater anyway. I get the impression DEs are just sort of like Voldemort's private army. What's the say Narcissa isn't just in the normal ranks of followers?

Maybe not. In book 4, he wanted to prove himself by killing Harry. He would've insulted Harry by saying something like, "You're so weak the only thing that could protect you was love,". I don't think he knows.

But Narcissa can't be a DE because she can love.

The Death Eaters can love. It's only Voldemort who can't, it's what makes him so different, and therefore capable of doing what he does. It's not really killing or torture that separates him from everybody else, you can be sure that some Aurors are just as capable of it as the Death Eaters. It's more...you know, being prepared to destroy one's own soul for the dream of immortality that makes him worse than anybody before and most likely after him. By the way, I find it most unlikely that all the Death Eaters who have children of their own, Lucius, Crabbe, Goyle, Nott etc do not love their children, and evil as she might seem, Bellatrix seems rather close to Narcissa as well. And Draco? The one reason why he worked for Voldemort was the fact that he was worried about his family. And would Voldemort have chosen him to punish Lucius if he didn't think Lucius loved his son? Voldemort knows love exists, but he looks down on it, he considers it a weakness. Nevertheless, he uses it. After all, people who love will do foolish things like sacrifce themselves if you only threaten to harm their loved ones. By the way, I believe that is what precisely this that Voldemort had in mind when he sent both Draco and Snape after Dumbledore: during their duel in the MoM, he realized that the only one who could defeat DD was DD himself, so he set up a scenario that would make DD sacrifice himself...but that's OT and belongs somewhere else.

I don't think LV sent Draco out to torture Lucius. Lucius doesn't care enough about Draco, he wanted to harm Narcissa.

Hang on.

You think Lucius cares more for his wife than his heir?
