Errors in the HP Books

Which one is your favorite so far. Are they getting even better as the characters develop over time?

In an interview JKR said that Dobby's magic (and therefore probably all house elves') is different from wizards' magic. For example, house elves don't seem to have to use wands. So I think Dobby doesn't apparate but uses his special magic to cover distances.

I was reading the 1st book (for the 156th time  ) and I wrote down the information on Harry's wand. It says:
«holly, one phoenix feather, 26 centimettres»
But then I re-read the 4t one, the chapter "The wands weighting" (I hope I have translated correctly. I came out with a mistake: his wand "grew up" 2 centimettres, because it says that it has 28 centimettres!
I just hope this is just n the portuguese version...

Yes same here, 11 inches both times. 11 inches = 27.5 cm.

This might be an error, but doesn't have to be. How do the students leave hogwarts? If it's in the same way as they came, then Harry shoul've seen the Thestrals in the end of 4th book

You are absolutly right FA.
In GOF Harry and Ron were watching for the carrages while Hetrmione stepped aside for a word with Krum. Well Harry was watching for them anyway.
But yes Harry should have seen them at that point!
Good catch.

People looking for mistakes always find them but I suppose you could always try and find an arguement against a mistake. My arguement about the thestrals would be that it takes a while for it to take effect after seeing death.

I'm just rerading Gof and I noticed something.

When the Weasleys, hermione and harry come to the place where they should find the portkey for going to the Quidditch worl cup, they met Cedric and his father. Cedric was about 17/18 years old - it writes so in the book, and he was now to go in the seventh class at Hogwarts. And his father says to Arthur that he can't wait for Cedric to take his Apparation test.
In Ootp Fred&George are about to go to their 7th class. They have allready taken their Apparation test.
Does that mean Apparation test is not taken at school or you can choose to take it or has Rowling just made a mistake?

It may be something like taking a driving licence, you can do it at school, but you don't have to and then you can do it in a specialised school for driving later (at any time you want).

Possible.
But hufflepuffs are hardworking and Cedric is a good student so I don't see why he would miss his chance to do it at school.

But, I'm only guessing here...

Perhaps Cedric wasn't yet 17 at the time of the World Cup.

Fred and George celebrate their birthdays on April 1st which meant they had turned 17 at the end of their sixth year. Being that the twins were still at school and at the end of the book is always on the Hogwarts Express, we weren't shown that they could then do out of school magic. It makes all the sense that once the twins arrived home they were taken to do their Apparation test. Perhaps those students that turn 17 while in school must wait until holidays to go take their test?

In the book it says, let me quote:
Cedric Diggory was an xtremely handsome boy of around seventeen

so, yeah, maybe he wasn't 17 then.
But all that sounds really suspicious to me. Take the apparation test during summer :o

maybe that's just me
